r50 3.2 diesel pump issues?

Post by The Green Machine »

I have had the following issues over the last few months:

1. Slight surging when put in drive when starting cold ie. accelerates more than it should.
2. Engine dying at about 70-80 km/hr. Have to pull over. It then just starts as per normal.
3. Vibrations in the engine or gearbox when it changes into overdrive ie. when it changes gear the gearbox seems to vibrate quite badly for about 3 seconds before changing.
4. Surging when stopping for the lights.

All the above are not happening all the time but now and then on say every second trip. Normal it is accompanied by the "engine check" light coming on, which then goes off when the problem stops.

I am told the diesel pump may be on the way out?

Any help appreciated.

Get your hands on a mechanical turbo pump and accelerator cable as soon as ya can... one day soon you will go to start it and it will only idle.
Had exact same issues. Thought it was also crook auto trans but the auto box issues are a symptom of a surging engine as the auto ecu relies on inputs from the eti system to operate properly.

If your mechanicly minded and can get your hands on the bits, only the cost of the parts, read my r20 thread. To give you an idea of what needs to be done, a bonus is if you can get a mech pump with the t.p.s ontop so less to do later.

Other issues:

- surges while sitting on 50-60 km/hr, revs go up for no reason and orange light comes on.
- sometimes cuts out completely while sitting at lights.

Is this diesel pump also?

Yep. The needle valve is basically a pin moved up and down by magnets, the needle valve wears due to our poor fuel and starts binding, then the contacts inside the pump that drives the needle valve start breaking down. Giving it a mind of its own. Eventually it wont work any more, you will go to start it one day and all it will do is idle, no matter how hard you stand on the gas pedal.

I test drove several when I brought mine..the majority of them did this to some degree.. Ended up taking a chance on ZD30 instead..so far nothing major haha.
Incidentally, mine vibrates when the torque convertor locks, never gotten any worse, checked gearbox and engine mounts, all rear bushes replaced, still does it

I got my diesel pump rebuilt by Bosch in Penrose. It was $2500 all up, which included two new engine mounts as mine had collapsed. It was like a new vehicle to drive afterwards. I put it off as long as I could, but when it was done, I wondered why i hadn't gotten it fixed sooner! I think the pump alone is about $2200. They did tell me if I was feeling brave I could whip it out myself and bring it to them, which could have gotten the price down to around $1800.
