seasons greetings all...
over the new years going has slowed slightly but my interest has definitely not faded
h20 with his infinite wealth of connections was able to hook me up with a profile cut spacer.. 12mm deep, shaped like the top of the king pins and drilled to suit the soon to be placed hi tensile bolts..
took a stud out and placed all the lower arm, cone washers, spacer, upper arm and its cone washers on to measure the length of bolt needed... i'm goin shoppin for four 80mm by 12mm thread grade 8.8 nickel bolts tomorrow..
mocked bits to measure length of bolt needed.. (p.s, i know, top of flipped king pin is ugly... that'll be goin too..)
lined up the steerin box to approximately where its going to be livin out the rest of its life.. putting 5mm on both sides of chassis rail and bolt right through with the crush tube sittin between the plates etc...
mocked mounting..
will be more to come on this..
keep cool till after school..

fawkers...

;-p
dont get bolts at all !....
like i told you before, get cap heads ! higher grade tensile strength !
high tensile bolt = grade 8.8
cap head bolt = grade 12.8
on something thats holding your steering on i wouldnt even think about using anything less than the strongest option
looking good to by the way bro

Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
Cheers Cal... I was just about to look up some pics, for some reason my comp didn't want to load the Nord-lock web site
You should be able to get them from any fastner shop.... if it helps I go through SteelMaster they give a good discount
might have something to do with how much I spend tho
Oh and a word to the wise measure those bolts spot on you want as much thread as you can get without poking the bolts through and fouling your steering swivil
Cheers Reece

lined up the steering box to keep the front of the arm 'in-line' with the steerin flipped arm on the other side..
the little spacer for the flip arm hi-steer steering..
and the steering mocked up..
mudbum's hookin me up with some bolts for the thing and nordlocks too..
once holes for powersteering box were marked, they got drilled out and sleeved up with the tube..
and from the inside of the rail.. (nb, its gonna be a longer piece of 5mm plate used on the inside of rail here to sturdy up the rail where the hole is..)
finally bolted up to the rail with a bit of 5mm plate...
gotta do the steering shafts now..

been playin with bits so here goes....
during night shifts i was able to utilise time pulling apart the front calipers and blasting them with sandy goodness.. honed out the bore then gave em a coat of red vht caliper paint stuffs, then proceeded to refurbish the crappy piston's and seals that were well (in your best fatty vaughton voice) goooone...
with and without pistons...
finished product..
it was sooo easy to rekit the calipers i'm glad i gave it a nudge myself.. man, i've heard of places redoin em for $100 or more? eh to that!
also at night i milled the top of the flipped steering arm off, to be flush..
then slapped it all together for a final fitting..
and the last in an ongoing saga.. the power stering box is finally all tubed up, plated and bolted..
outer rail view..
inner..
both the 5mm plates will be fully welded at a later date..
t.t.f.n...

" Capscrews Capscrews Capscrews"
dont know how right this is but heres how i think it works Given the potential for shock loading if you hit a rock etc then a higher grade bolt is more likely to shatter than a lower grade which will bend a bit more. The certifier was keen for us to use bolts as opposed to capscrews to.

your certifier needs his head read. if thats the case then why not just use mild steel bolts, why use high tensile in the first place ? cap screws with a 12.8 grade will break more quickly yes if given enough force, which would have to be a third as much again force as that needed to break a 8.8 grade bolt which will yeild slower but at a much less force than that of the cap screw. the up shot of it is a grade 12.8 cap screw will take much more load to break than a grade 8.8 bolt.and there will be no bending in there as its completly encapsulated so there is only potential to sheer the bolt or stretch it to breaking point.
i know what i would rather have on my steering
but if thats what your cert man wants i guess he knows best
im no engineer thats just my opinion
wheres suzola when you need him

Madaz wrote:Just wondering , do you still have the tapered locking collets in the lower steering arm under that spacer?
yep... both sets of 'cone washers' are in their respective steering arms..
as for the views on putting the capscrews in at a later date.. yeah, i'm seein where ya comin from and will possibly go down that road later..
as for now, these will do, more mods to perform on the 40 first!!
