changing 89 pajero gearbox oil

Post by panda_dan »

Hey guys im new here, so go easy.

I'v got myself an immac 89 pajero exceed with the big 4 wheel disks and 4D56 engine.

It chinks a wee bit getting into 3rd so i assume the synchros are a wee bit worn. Im going to drop the gearbox oil and replace it.

I reckon it'll take about 2.3L of oil. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Any particular brand of gearbox oil people have had good / bad experiences with? I was going to get redline heavy shockproof gear oil from BNT.

Second issue: How to do it. Is it as easy as opening the plug on the bottom of the gearbox, draining it, and then taking off the shifter and filling from the top?

Does the transfer case drain itself into the gearbox? Or do i have to manually drain the transfer case too?

I only know the basics so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks to you all - Danny.

has it got the alloy box or cast box? We use BP easyshift in them at work.Drain from the bottom of casing or pan depending on box,and fiil plug is on left hand side of box about half way up .Around 2.2l for alloy or 3 for cast.Transfer box is separate

had redline in a pajero of mine and it was the smothest box ive had but then i striped that vehicle so never had anything to compare it with. i fill mine from the side of the box, that way you can tell how much to put in because when its full it starts to come out the hole. cant remember how much oil it took tho sorry. and like mrplane said, transfur is seperate.

Get under your Paj and have a good probe around is the best way to learn - its all common sense stuff - If it's got oil in it - It will have a bung,

The bolt will roughly be on the lowest point like your engine and diffs. Some where up the side will be the fill bung, some transmissions are filled by the dipstick if you can't see a bung.
