repowering a D22

repowering a D22
looking at a D22 with a nakered engine... I have seen then on trade me with the TD27 in them, but what do you lot think? RD28T would be nice, would a TD42 be to big, or best to put a 3000cc back in it?
Re: repowering a D22
would need to chop the firewall out and toss it in the scrap bin to get an inline 6 in there, a TD42 would probably weigh more than the truck so you'd probably need to stick a set of heavy duty leaf springs in the front to support it
theres lots of options some easier than others all depends how much work and cost you want to budget for

Re: repowering a D22
what engine was the old one?
they came out with td27, qd32, zd30, yd25 and overseas a few weird engines.
there is a crowd that does qd32ti conversions on them.
td42 is to big and heavy. i do know of one with td42 but that is a patrol chassis with navara body on it.
rd28ti is fairly long and not much power.

you dont need to chop the fire wall.
chopping the fire wall to shift the power train back and using a suitable manual trans to mate to the RD28 will put your gear stick back between the seats by the seat belt buckles.
It can be done.....
you will how ever need to get inventive with the front top radiator support with fans in front of the radiator and bonnet pins to the sides instead of the latch in the middle.
1985 LN56 hilux engine bays are smaller and we still managed to cram a RB30 twin cam with turbo's and intercooler in there....what's that got to do with it you ask? the RD28 is the same casting as the RB25/30 blocks just higher compression and different heads.
you will need to get your hands on either a RE4r01A transmission from a nissan skyline GTS4 and mount your transfer case to the rear or a manual FS5R30A from a nissan skyline GTS4 or GTR or FS5R50A from a rd/rb powered patrol and bolt your transfer to it.
If that sounds like too much work but you still want a diesel try for a QD32 eti with a mechanical injector pump and R50 terrano/pathfinder gearbox combination
or petrol 3 litre v6 from a 95-96 nissan maxima with a WD21 terrano v6 gearbox would go like a cut cat too.
the RD28 is an old dog now, there are 4 cylinder engines out there that are safley capable of making twice the horse power with half the effort of shoe horning an old inline six in there.

fs5r30a is used with rd28 and rb30 in patrol (I'm after one could swap fs5r30a from d22 4wd to anyone that knows of one),
bd30 from an atlas truck will see you get direct injection and reportedly bolts to a td27 bell,
plenty of those little atlas things get written off might pay to watch turners site
