How to remove this shifter unit?

Post by crazydragon »

Need some advice.

I have a KZJ78 with manual trans. The shifter was a bit loose so I went to Toyota and ordered the housing unit. The housing unit also came with a bush that the shifter sits on. I've also ordered a bush at goes at the end of the shifter stick (connects to the transmission).

So I've changed the bushing at the end of the stick, and put the bushing that it sits on into the old unit. It works fine, but the old unit's pins are slightly loose. Now I have NO IDEA how to take the old housing off. It's blocked by the cab metal as shown in the pics. Both the rear 12mm bolts and that unknown bolt are blocked.

Any advice guys? Should I just return the unit back to Toyota (not even sure if possible as I used the sitting bush that came with the unit).

That or stick a jack under gbox crossmember, unbolt crossmember and lower jack an inch or two? Shouldn't need to drop it too much to get the needed room.

Im going with this suggestion.

Not sure if it is an easy job to do through the top but if not ...

Remove stick (push down on stick and turn retainer 90 degrees I'm guessing but could be wrong). Then a set of spanners to remove the bolts, slide the piece forward to remove and reverse to install new one. Hard to gauge the room for spanners etc in the pic.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yup managed to take it out but it was a PAIN to do so. Not much room for spanner so I could only loosen like 3 degrees before spanner hitting something else. Took a long time at snails pace to do it but managed to do so.

Now I have another question, that bit where I marked a ???, anyone know what's that? The new unit doesn't have that, but had a hole there instead. I couldn't take the old one out, it's loose but I tried taking it off using a pair of pliers but it didn't work. Guessing it's not important?

the ??? bit is the breather. its pressed in. best thing to do is to tap it and fit a hose connection and run a breather line.

not sure why you changed the housing.
after market seats are available, a lot more reliable than stock ones.

Oh.. Damn probably should have asked here before going into Toyota and buy them.

But thanks for the advice, I'll probably ask here next time before going into Toyota to have them diagnose the problem instead.

should be okish. i'm not a fan of the stock breathers so if you get half a chance i would change them.
dont forget about the diff ones.
theres also the transfer/adapter one as well.
