80 series gearbox oil change

Post by a80crewza »

Hi I am going to change the oil in my gearbox and was wondering what you think the best oil is to use and generally how much oil goes in there. Shifts fine at the moment but not sure if it would need replacing yet?

How often should this fluid be changed?

Cheers,
Tom.

Dont use a GL5 rated fluid, the 80 series syncros are quite soft... i found the later model fluids it just didnt like it.
I used a GL4 rated fluid from aussie ( penrite oil ) i cant remember will try and see if i still have floating around so i can give you the spec.

Give Elf (Lubricants NZ ) a call in chch 0800 353 645 and they will freight anyway and about 45 buck for GL4.. It was the only place I could get gl4..

Supercheap sells Nulon GL-4 off the shelf but im sure most places could order some in other brands. This is presuming its manual?

Yup manual. Is Nulon or Penrite the way to go (GL4) and what amount of fluid do they take?

Cheers

GL4 from Elf.. I wouldn't use a gl 4 / 5 mix.. with softer cyros gl5 will eat them.. its what I have found in my 70 series xfer .. think what to use when date of manufacturer as newer oils these days are way more sophisticated than the older oils.. K.I.S.S is the rule I would use

75-90 weight would be fine GL4 is what is recommended in the fsm but it also states GL5 but I would NOT use GL5
