Y60 Intercooler Setup

Post by Dundaberg »

So looking at setting up the Subaru water to air intercooler on my Safari. Just wanting to to know if anyone has done this before and how they did it.

Safari engine will flow to much air for subbie intercooler. You will be limited to 10 psi max with that intercooler. They max out at 450cfm. I have an old thread on here with all the calculations in it if you search. All is not lost though. Use the water pump and radiator from the subbie system and get an intercooler from aliexpress. Here is my finished system.
Need to have a separate pressurised header tank for the i/c fluid. Pump mounted behind lh head light and radiator fitted in front of a/c radiator. Needed to space bottom of grill out by 40mm to make it fit, but you cant tell to look at it. Then run the hoses through a new hole drilled beside lh side of radiator and connect it all up.

Hope that is helpful.

How much body lift to fit that cooler in?
Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

I'm running a legacy intercooler on my 2.5 L200 and I found the subaru radiator was the limiting factor, not the intercooler. I had 4 temp sensors on the air in and out and the water in and out. I was getting a consistent air outlet temp of 7 degrees above the coolant out temp but the coolant temp keeps rising.
That says to me that the intercooler does a consistent job but the radiator can't get the heat out to atmosphere fast enough.
My 4d56 is running a modified turbo with a bigger inlet wheel to get more boost at low rpm and runs to a maximum boost of 16psi.

Good question about body lift. Forgot to mention about that. I have a 50mm lift fitted. It would fit with a 30mm lift though. Interesting data about the temps on the 4d56. If you do your flow calculations for a 2.5 litre engine with 16 Psi boost you will find the subbie intercooler is a good size. 4.2 moves more air.
Might have to investigate air and water temp measuring at some stage. Though my egt's are quite low running 17 psi boost.

Very interesting. Im only running a 25mm body lift so might struggle to get something to fit in the without going a bit bigger.
