HDJ81 auto gear selector shift lock malfunction

Post by cornfarmer »

Hey guys,

1991 VX ltd HDJ81 auto trans requires manual override to move selector out of park.

Started happening after driving on wet days and post puddle splashing.

Brakes lights ok.

Shift lock solenoid resistance ok.

I'm thinking there's a loose connection from the trans selector switch.

Any idea what wires coming off the trans feed the signal to the shift lock ECU, or does anyone have a wiring diagram for the shift lock circuit? My Haynes manual doesn't have it.

Thanks.
Nothings a problem if you don't give a f#ck.

Have a read thru this.... Its how Toyota does it...

I had an issue once when the linkages under the truck got knocked out of adjustment during a trip... And I needed to push the lever forward to get it to unlock. Perhaps yours is just bias too far one way.

Had a similar problem on mine when towing the Jet ski, but was OK when towing other trailers, and jet ski trailer was OK behind other vehicles. As part of my search for the problem I replaced a blown Dome Light fuse and everything started working fine, as long as I didn't plug the jet ski in. I did rewire the jet ski trailer, without finding likely problems, and never had the problem again. never ever worked out why the Dome light fuse should create this problem, but may be worth a look.
