Was driving the 80 the other night and a car came towards me so went to low beam which worked fine but when I flicked back to high beam I had no lights.
After a lot of testing I have worked out low beam is working fine and when I pull the stalk to flash highbeam it only works on the two outside lights,
When the stalk is on highbeam and pulled flash the highbeam dashlight comes on and the switch in the column seems to be working when I pulled everything off to check,
A mate had a spare Headlight relay which I chucked in that's hasn't helped when but I can here it click when I turn lights on,
Also bulbs seem to be still fine and not broken fuses
If anyone knows where to look next before I take it to an auto sparky that would be very helpful and also does anyone have a Piranha Super Loom in there vehicle as im considering just replacing my existing wiring for headlights with one?
Also does Piranha have a supplier in New Zealand
Thanks Oliver

Re: 80 Series no highbeam
You wont believe it, but I have exact same issue.
For a day or two my high beam came back but now it has gone again.
I got a feeling its a loose connection or something in the steering column at the base if the stalk, especially seeing as how it camr back briefly.
I havent bothered looking and probably wont until closer to my WOF in about 4 months.
Also mine may be slightly different as when I hit the high beam all my lights go out. Great fun on back country roads
but if I pull the stalk towards me the high beam works
Good luck with yours. Will be interested to hear if you remedy the issue

The stalk is a common failure point. If you have a multi meter you can test the stalk.
Re: 80 Series no highbeam
Hi Oliver,
Same problem with mine, works on Low beam not on High beam and works on Flash high beam, if you flick the stalk fast from low to high it will sometimes work.
Has happened to me twice before and has just started happening intermittently. Change it slow and dosent work, flick it and generally it does.
The fault is the contacts in the stalk switch, can take it out , ( need to take the steering wheel off ) and lever it apart carefully, sus out which contact is not working and then give them a bit of a clean with some dry Wet&Dry.
I am guessing the contacts get burnt due to switching too much current over time, should really fit a relay to take the load off the contacts.
Cheers
Tim

Re: 80 Series no highbeam
Had the same problem years ago, Contacts on the steering column where the two looms meet were burnt out. Ended up making a wee jumper wire to eliminate any bad connection.
Re: 80 Series no highbeam
do the lamps in 80 series pass the current directly through the stalk or does the stalk activate a relay? if not get some relays in there will solve the problem forever and give you brighter headlights
