2lt egr/ecu delete?
2lt egr/ecu delete?
I am after some info regarding getting rid of the egr system and it's associated butterflys etc on an 89 Surf ln130 2lt. From what I have found so far, if I pull the lot out, manualise the glow system and give the pump 12v I should be able to get rid of the ecu altogether (it is a manual) does that sound right? Or is it better to leave it in place and just unplug all the crap? I am not sure if the ADD system needs the engine computer to work? I need the room for intercooler plumbing and it looks to be largely redundant having had various vsv's blocked over time. The electronics in this truck seem to be a complicated solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Thanks in advance!
Re: 2lt egr/ecu delete?
the ecu is an emissions ecu. no fueling or timing. just runs the glows and egr system. can't remember if the fuel cut goes through ecu or not. will have to check the diagrams. only nice thing is the ecu hives soft engine shutdown and over run protection.
ADD has a separate mini ecu.
if your fitting IC and want to get rid of intake butterflies completely, get the manifold adaptor plate made.

centre hole i think is stock 2.25". make that 2.5" but you need to grind out the manifold to suit.

Re: 2lt egr/ecu delete?
I wish I had just asked here before I spent hours trawling through various other sources, thanks a lot for that! I have already got an adapter sorted courtesy of a wreck I acquired, among lot's of other things. My wife reckons I am the only person who has bought a truck to suit the parts......I had looked at 'porting' the manifold a little but flagged it as I intend to put my 3L in eventually and will put on the bigger nz new manifold at that time, is there anything to gain there in your opinion? I bought the truck with the intention of moving the 2L on but I have been pleasantly surprised by how well it goes so I figure I will have a bit of a play and see where it ends up.

????
mine is nz new 2.8. manifold and is same size as the 2lte which came out of the surf.
i wish i ported mine out. 2.25" pipe is not all that common. 2.5" is easy to get.
i originally had 2.5" adapter on it. but as its a little bigger than the manifold, water/oil gets forced out at the 'step'. keeping them the same size makes pipe sealing a whole lot easier.
Re: 2lt egr/ecu delete?
I had a Japanese 2.8 ( I think.....was a while ago) which had a similar mani to the 2lt but the nz new one i replaced it with was 'side feed' rather than coming in the top and had a larger diameter inlet and different air box and inlet plumbing. i thought it was an NZ vs Japan thing but perhaps it was different by year? My adapter is 2.25 by the looks so I will stick with that for now and see how she goes.
Re: 2lt egr/ecu delete?
the side feed is hilux. hiace has top feed.
Re: 2lt egr/ecu delete?
This one was a jap LN106 single cab, it was the original motor and I assumed factory inlet plumbing and egr setup (definitely looked factory, pressed steel pipework etc). Anyway it went a lot better with the less restrictive inlet and I am interested to see if there is an improvement with forced induction as well. Thanks again for your help, I will tear into it next week!
