Oil coming out of top of diff breathers?! help

Post by a80crewza »

Just went for a drive and got home and there was a pool of thick oily stuff on the ground. Traced it up to the diff breather hose located in the engine bay.... looks like it has been spewing out here, what causes this?? Has not happened before and hasn't seen water in ages.

Thanks.

oil change time, might be gettin a bit thin on it. or crap blocking the hose, built up pressure when running and spewed some out,

Or if it has recently been changed a bit too much oil went back in.

Seen it happen after lift kits fitted where the axle rolls forward/back on caster depending on if it's aft or forward diff as the oil level gets closer to the breather fitting.

maypay to talk to turoa about making it part time 4wd, better fuel economy too.

Not trying to be funny but can someone explain 'triple lockers' for me pls?
A front diff has 1 locker, the rear diff another locker so a vehicle can only be twin locked :? .
Nissan driver obviously so don't get it when the yota guys say their 4wd is triple locked??

Cheers

Another reason you might have oil coming out of a breather is if the thing it vents is full of water & the oil is floating on the top :D

Does it have ARB Lockers? If you engage the front one with the compressor running, remove the breather tube and see if you can hear air leaking into the diff ?

Okay so decided to replace fluid today in front diff. Wasn't really prepared to well though  drained the old stuff, was really thick and about 3.5-4 litres came out.. 2.6 litres is what is meant to be in there. Breather and hose was all gunked up with oil so cleaned them out etc. put new stuff in and seems all good.

was probably full of water if you had an extra 1-1.5 litres in there you cant overfill them unless you tip the truck on its side and pour the oil down the axle tube :D

Possible that the axle seal(s) are shot and grease from the CV joint is getting flung in and mixed with the oil. Therefore its also possible that birfield grease is contaminated with gear oil, which will eventually destroy the wheel bearings/kingpin bearings too.

Might be time for a front axle rebuild, or at least disassemble one of the knuckles to see if the CV grease has become contaminated with gear oil.

Toyo specifies this should be done every 100,000km on this particular vehicle.
