Lock it front or rear

Post by terrano »

Next on the agenda for the mighty cruiser is a locker. It currently has a factory LSD rear diff, i was thinking keep LSD in the back and put a Lokka in the front, or save some extra pennies and put an air locker in the back and move the LSD to the front. What is going to be the most beneficial?

Switchable locker in front.
Leave rear with LSD

by switchable I am meaning one you can turn on or off. Front lockers can be dicey in the wrong hands or wrong situations. Air or Electric would be my choice

Im opp to skid
80% drive is in the rear. So lock the rear up.
the front will be assisted by the lsd in climbing out of holes etc
with sidlings the lsd may create s bit of slippage but that can be controlled by leaving the rear open and allowing the front to pull you along.

imho go locker in rear lsd in front

Cheers guys, so a switchable locker sounds like the better option just choosing front or rear as there seems to be a lot of different ideas, more research is needed i think :D

Advantage here is that you can ran them in both ends.
fit the locker into the front open head and ran it in the front for a good test period.
then swap them over and rerun the tracks and gauge it from there.
this will also give you plenty of practice on pulling the front end down to replace blown cvs. As this is what front lockers are good at doing

Having a LSD front, I'd say leave it in the rear but shim it up, as most of the time when extra traction is required in the front is because one front wheel is fully unloaded, LSD usless in that situation as they still usually require some sort of resistance from both wheels in order to work properly.

That is unless you are going to shim it up as tight as a nuns proverbial so it locks anyway.

I'm with skid. Ive got factory electric locker in back and lockrite in front, wish they were other way round. Auto locker can be a b...ch in tight rocky ground or on snow. Would be real nice to have the choice in the front end. So tighten the lsd in the back and save for air / electric for front. My 2c.

If you've only got one locker in a SWB 4x4 put it in the back.

If your LSD works real good in the back then a switchable locker in the front might be an option but (mudlva speaks truth) I would budget on some cromoly CV's as well. 35" rubber & a front locker will blow std CV's into itty bitty pieces on a regular basis unless you drive like a nana.

Cheers
