Post by Dundaberg »

Going to look at at complete PTO setup my my Safari this afternoon. Anything I should be looking out for before I hand over the cash?

Cheers, Brandon

Hi, don't know much about exact construction of winch but would have thought you would also want to check the input shaft radial and axial float to check the bearings and also the backlash to check wear of the worm and wheel, don't know what is classed as good or bad..

Cheers guys, ive taken the winch amd fitted it up. Everything check out ok, fitted it up amd its perfect. Only thing missing is a clamp for the engagement cable by the pto drive off the gearbox. Should be pretty easy to sort.

Check the shear pins out. Most people fit an 8mm cap screw for the one nearest the gearbox and a genuine shear pin up front because they are easier to punch out when you snap one

Very stupid question, iv never owned a pto winch before, the shear pins connect the driver shaft to the output and input shafts?

And use a nyloc nut on the bolt - also make sure the bolt isn't too long cos it will connect with stuff when the shaft is spinning...I shortened my bolt to just past the face of the nyloc nut. I also had to drill the shaft hole slightly bigger for the 8mm bolt.

Yeah those are them usually have a split pin through them to retain it. Supposedly the rating of the shear pins is 10,000lbs. Something like that anyway.

Oh yeah sweet. It didnt come with any. Iv just used cotter pins for now, will get a high tensile bolt for the gearbox end, and a genuine pin for the winch end.

Carry a spare 8mm mild steel nut and bolt
Remove the end plate of pto and inspect the bronze wheel for wear,( I found mine nearly stuffed)
Some people recommend to reverse the bronze wheel periodically to even up wear on each side of teeth.
With end plate off, you can rotate it when putting back on to get filler plug up much higher, get more oil in it
Also allows you to clean out the gunge that's probably got 20 yrs of bronze wear there
Make sure you get the right oil - EP400,
Put hose tail on top instead of little breather, run a rubber hose up into eng bay,( its spew out your little breather- the oil will expand under lots of use)
Some also run a another bottle of oil off this.

stick Elf Reductelf SP680 or equivalent in it, you need a sludge gun to get it in there its pretty thick shit, as already said rotate the end plate so the filler is up at the top to get more oil in there if it hasn't already been done and run a breather hose up into the engine bay they spit a bit of oil out when they work hard :D some people do two hoses and a remote reservoir in the engine bay to get the hot oil to circulate
