Hi, I a 1988 Nissan Homy with a TD27. I am currently having troubles with this motor burning coolant. I had the gaskets replaced and motor was taken to a machine shop when the problem first occurred but this did not fix the issue. I now believe it is a cracked cylinder sleeve not sure. Any help or advice is much appreciated.
Also, if it comes down to it and a motor replacement is the way to go. Will I be able to put a TD27T in and what modifications will need to be made?

If you had a cracked liner you would have mayonaise under the oil filler cap/rocker cover, as even though it may have cracked in the upper bore, it will still leak fluid to the crank case as the piston is above the crack on its revolution cycle.
I doubt a leak down test would help, as the crack wouldn't let any more pressure release then say the piston rings would let pressure past the piston during normal operation.
IF it is only using coolant, I'd shove a bottle of liquid aluminium in it as the new gasket may have not sealed properly or i'd be looking at leaking frost plugs, corroded pipe fittings around the block, heater core matrix perished rubber hoses.
If it is an automatic check that the brass heat exchanger in the bottom tank of the radiator isnt leaking fluid into the trans circut, as once up to operating temp the coolant circut will have higher pressure then the trans coolant return line, this can be detected by seeing little red bubbles in the radiator as it wont mix with anti freeze even after getting churned up by the water pump.
In saying that. the conversion. turbo = cert. no question about it. you would be best to buy a N/A QD32 as this should slide in under a WOF inspectors radar but still give good performance gain.
