which Navara diesel engine to go for?

Post by haz77 »

Had a search on here but noting that relevant or just to much coming back in the search so thought I might open a can of worms up an let people throw them around abit!

Basically the question is what diesel engine is best avoided & which is the best bet for a 2000<2007ish Narava, not thinking for offroad use more towing & general 4x4 stuff, also what essential maintenance would you need to be checking has been done for say a 100<180'k motor, turbo rebuild, injector replacment etc?

Im guessing its not going to be a simple or straight answer!

I would definitely stay away from the ZD30 motor. They are gutless and we are seeing heaps of these at work at the moment with stuffed injector pumps. $2500-$4000 to fix the pump

is that an unavoidable failure or a fault from lack of maintenace such as having the pump refurbished before it fails?

ZD30 has a bit of a reputation of being a time bomb. Certainly not the reliability you'd expect from a Nissan. Get a well looked after one if you choose a zd30. Make sure you keep up the servicing, and don't thrash it (never let it overheat etc) and it'll give you a good run.

Really is unavoidable, just luck of draw. The pumps have an ECU in them and have various failures

Have read on here about a "common problem" with the yd25 blowing, also in that thread the qd32 got slated along with the zd30, does that actually leave any engine you can trust or did nissan drop the ball in the millenium?

Seriously though are all years tainted with the same brush or did they realise & deal with the issues?

not really, simply because one of the big justifications for upgrading from the trusty terrano td27 is to get more power for towing and an engine that doesnt pull 3k rpm doing 90kph in 4th, allways thought it would be great to have a 3ltr model of the td27 because they are a great engine other wise.

Ive heard good things about the qd32's, apart from the injector pump which can be converted back to manual.

they have a fair bit of power compared to the td27's.

otherwise have you thought about a petrol?

for work i drive a 09 urvan with the zd30 and auto( cause I don't fit in a manual....) and don't rate the auto. kicks down way too much, and revs its ring piece out far too much...don't know if your looking for autos or manuals, but assuming they run the same family of autos might be something to keep in mind.
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

the urvan zd30 is a bit different. its common rail and its really underpowered. no idea why they detuned it so much.

best bet for a td27 upgrade is qd32 and turbo it (unless you get the qd32t). td27 turbo gear bolts on, afaik all the oil feed and return are all there. aftermarket turbo kits are available if you want a better turbo.
the efi injection pump is prone to wear so a pump conversion would be best.

the 2003 on zd30 is not bad. injection pumps are prone to damage from poor fuel. but its a major conversion due to the ecu. but the qd32 turbo will do the same power if not more and be far easier to install.

Am I right that they stopped making the 3.2td in 2000?

Manual is prefered and no to petrol, I dont earn enough to have a petrol as a towing vehicle

That is correct by wiki standards.

I think the newer truck run a 2.5 YD or TD Engine.

If you mean the v6 turbo diesel 3.0L engine, people may be getting confused between the v6 and the straight 4.

These are the engines the d40's come out with:

4.0L VQ40DE 265 hp (198 kW) V6
2.5L QR25DE 154 hp (115 kW) I4
2.5LYD25DDTi High Power 174 hp (130 kW)
2.5LYD25DDTi Mid Power Commonrail 144 hp (107 kW)
3.0 LV9X Engine V6 Turbodiesel 240 hp (175 kW)

The D22 navara's come out with:

3.3L VG33E V6
3.3L VG33ER V6 supercharged
2.4L KA24DE I4
2.5L TD25 I4 Diesel
2.5L YD25DDTi (133 PS) I4 Diesel
2.7L TD27Ti I4 Diesel
2.7L TD27ETi I4 Diesel
2.7L TD273 I4 Diesel
3.0L ZD30DDT I4 Diesel
3.2L QD323 I4 Diesel

I think the only major No No between the engines listed above is the ZD30

Otherwise the TDs with electric fuel pumps aparently flog out pretty quick/randomly, but im pretty sure they can be converted to a mechanicle pump (thanks to the interchangeability between Nissan)

Which model are you looking at?

the qd32 was the engine just before the yd25/zd30 came out. however nz mostly got the td27 up untill the zd30 came out. however there is a few qd32 navaras running around, some with aftermarket turbo kits. rumor was that nissan dealers where fitting the turbo's as they where competing with toyota 1kz turbo 3 litre.
qd32t is from the terrano.

zd30 is not that bad, the early YD25 is worse as it spits out the big end bearings.

Prob limited to d22 price wise, so it reads like any would be ok apart from the 2.5L YD25DDTi or the 3.0L ZD30DDT.

Reading enough bad reports of toyotas to give me no reason to think there any better

apart from...... !
90% of 2000 -2007 navara would be zd30. the rest are 2wd yd25 or the petrol v6. don't think they sold many petrol ones here.
either get the series 1 D22 with a td27 or qd32 and turbo it or get a series 2 with a zd30.

theres a few things you can do to help with zd30 reliability.
but don't forget shit fuel and lack of maintenance will kill any diesel.

depends on which navara.
D22's there is/was a crowd doing conversions. may have it worked out for the yd25 versions. the qd32t would be a decent power upgrade.

with D40's its a down grade in power and they have a lot more electrics to get around. eg the speedo pickup is the ABS sensors so probably need to keep ecu etc running.

alot of jargon there thats not really needed. you want a qd32 block and head from a 96 onwards terrano/ pathfinder...a manifold and turbo from a facelifted r20(garrett) mistral and mechanical injector pump from a 95 r3M-r terrano. give the fyel pump a quater turn and you be harrasing folden falcadores all daylong.
i know...its exactly whati have underthe hood of my truck leaves the Td42-T in the weeds.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
