i take by neutral your coasting? if stationary it will be input or layshaft in gearbox or engine ancillary.

Coasting.. have tried with gearbox and transfer box in neutral.. but when driving is definitely noisier decelerating.. coming from front.. Does sound like diff.. giving symptoms of bearing or not set up right BUT have checked all is he as

in your first post did you mean you pulled the diff head out and checked and inspected all the bearings, preloads, backlash and meshing

Not positive it's what's wrong with your jeep but...
Mate had similar problem on his truck changed all the bearings etc, still did it.
Pulled it out again and took to a diff crowd and they said all the hardening had come off pinion and ring gears
It happened from shit getting into diff and turning oil into grinding paste

Interesting.. Don't think so though.. Nothing in oil and the oil all nice and clean..

Il second this, apparently more common than you'd think. Surfaces look fine at a glance

there must be ton's of aftermarket C&P's for those things in the states just wait till the NZ dollar comes back up and do an upgrade on the old eep it sounds like the factory C&P's have a known hardening problem if its that common :D
