td27t water lines

Post by Trench_rat »

So my non water cooled turbo finally overheated and gave up in spectacular fashion , i am replacing it with a water cooled t25 and was wondering if some kind bugger could post some pics of where the factory water lines run to. As i havent been able to track down any factory water lines im going to fabricate my own and i would like to have a bit of a guide to work off , any help would be much appreciated guys.

dont know about non intercooled td27 but you water feed will come from underneath thermostat housing and return to the block rear left side.

cant take pictures on mine as there is too much shit in the way with twin alternators and top mount intercooler etc

cheers for the reply man ive spotted a grub bolt on the block at the rear left like you describe , i think ill undo that and see if water comes out. i have no fittings on my thermo housing , does it come from the cool water line? ie. where the bottom radiator hose connects to?

ah yes im with you , so basically the cooled water from the radiator would flow through that pipe through the turbo and back into the rear of the block. I may look at trying to drill and tap a fitting into that housing or even tig weld something on there but first things first i need to go drain my coolant 8)

according to one of the yank forums that causes your temp gauge to run super hot and not read the real temp of the motor. i contemplated put a tee joint into the hose barb that the returning heater hose goes into but i think it will be easier to just drill and tap the housing and put a fitting in there close to the factory location

funny you should say that as i think the factory gauges are fairly inaccurate by the time the get to the age they are at now..i installed an after market one on mine and at half on the factory gauge is only 55 degrees on new one red line on the factory gauge is 90 on the new one.

Thats interesting , i doubt my gauge is anywhere near accurate either but from what i can gather by reading the thread , plumbing into the hot side of the thermo housing where the sensor is as opposed to the cold side like a factory setup caused the flow to reverse , meaning boiling hot water from the turbo was pouring out right beside the temp sender.

not as hot as the cylinder head at peak combustion temps though, pyro gauges read 6-900 degress out the manifold imagine what it is just above and around the top of the cylinder.

na mate just put a few hours into cleaning it all up and coating all the hot parts , the manifold is stock , the heat sheild is just made from a peice of scrap , the turbo is a stock nissan t28 ball bearing and the down pipe i made myself. Made plenty of progress today , the thermo housing now has a hose barb , the water lines are all made , all thats left to do is fit a hose barb to the block and then bolt everything together and hope for the best 8)

my 98 has a T28 A/R50 ball bearing, even parked idling it whistles.

Another future mod that I am looking at is fitting a Toyota SC14 supercharger and ditching the turbo altogether.
IMO this would give the TD27 much greater low down torque, which it needs.
Probably not the best setup for on road\cruising performance but for an off road application I think it would be potentially better than a turbo.
To give credit where credit is due, this was originally KBJJs idea, I just think it is a great idea and would be really keen to procure one of those superchargers and make it fit, and maybe get rid of the clutch on it and find a custom pulley size that will have the puppy making full boost at 800rpm.

Combined with low range transfer gears and of course locked differentials, that thing would be scary capable.

Bought myself a T28 turbo, It has the hose connectors instead of the flanges, The top outlet hose would be tight up against the exhaust manifold and couldn't get the bolts in.
Also i am selling it now because i am thinking it is to large for the little TD27T, I am looking now for a T25 Silvia turbo with the 2 bolt flange at the front and 3 bolt on top.
How does the T28 turbo go? Is there low down and high end power? At what Rpm does it start spooling? What is the max PSI you are running?

i cant comment too much about how it goes as i havent tested it out too much. i originally intended on running a t25 but when this turbo arrived in the mail it looked overly large so i ran the numbers and it turned out to be a t28 ball bearing from a s15 silvia. It seems to spool just as guick as the little turbo i had on there to start with but it should hold peak boost right through the revs where as the smaller one would begin to drop off. once i have the boost gauge and controller hooked up i will report my findings
