pathfinder/terrano

Post by miked21newbie »

righto..... so we got given this from my parents 1992 nz new pathfiner, z24 2.4 petrol. straight as, no rust and one owner.

Image

the problem is that it has a crack between the valves in the 2nd cylinder so looses water and is seriously lacking any kind of power......

then along comes this...

Image

this is supposed to be my donor vehicle, stats are as follows:

td27 maunal (box has no reverse)
50mm body lift
some sort of blue lift springs
wound up torsions
tweaked diesel pump
roughly mounted intercooler, semi top mount (will post pics later for lol's)
3 inch exhaust
manual locking hubs
boost gauge
15x8 black roh's
kumho tl71's (pretty rooted)

so initially the plan was to swap the goodies over to the 2 door, as it's in mint condition and scrap/part out the 4 door, but the we start looking at the 4 door and think, hey should i just keep the 4 door as it's just the box that needs fixing/less hassle/no cert blah blah......

untill i look over the 4 door properly during daylight hours. both inner and outer cv boots are pretty much non existent, ball joints and tie rods don't look to great either,
neither does the roof rack mounting system......

Image

Image

:D :D :D :D :D

right rear door wont open unless you stick your arm inside the door and pull at the locking mech, both front door hinges are seriously poked (like 15mm play)
12 thousand over on the road users, no wof, reg on hold..........the list goes on.

basicly tryna get an idea of what people would do as far as conversion/driveline swap/cert.........

do i keep the 4 door and use the 2 door as the donor, or keep the 2 door and use the 4 door as the donor? either way there's a fair bit of work.

im pretty mechanicly minded and have no problen swapping the driveline, but when it comes to wiring iv'e got no idea.

Door lock mechinisms are interchangable on nissan's
RUCs are last owners problem as at date of change of ownership.
the ball joint's CV boots all that jazz are interchangable, easier just to change the whole hub/brake assembly over, but you'll need to swap cv axles aswell think the pathfinder was 28 spline the TD27 terrano was 27 spline either way the actual hubs are thesame just different spec bearings. which ever is less rooted really.

roof lining's may fit who knows.

roof rack fixing's are cosmetic really.. mine are screwed on using 70mm tec screws

forgot to take inter cooler pics but have deleted it for now until i can mount it properly, it was loosely placed around where the factory airbox should be, not even a zip tie to hold it still.......

pulled the gearbox out of the terrano last weekend (cheers zukmeista) and dropped it to a mate to try sort it, got a call a couple days later and was told the reverse gear looked like a D, not round and missing some teeth, 5th was basicly non existent and another gear was missing 1 tooth, but the good news was it had been rebuilt recently and still had mint bearings, will be fixed some time next week.

my missus works for partmaster so this week i ordered all the bits i need for the 2wd mod and now have it all sitting at home (minus re-tapped adjuster sleeves) as we already had 1 bent tie rod end, poked idler bushes and both joints on the centre link are gone. new nolathene sway bar bushes, cv boots, shock bushes, and swaybar link bushes

and have decided ill keep the 4 door and use the 2 door as a lawn ornament for a while.

i may still convert it all over one day or even need a donor body, just keep the plates live.

What brand parts did you get for the 2wd conversion? Some of the generic brands aren't much stronger but try either Moogs or 555s if you run into trouble

gmb.... they're from partsmaster, i'll see how they hold up and look for those brands if i bend stuff, i might pinch the steering box from the 2 door as well.

Stay away from the BNT ones, I fold them in half. i scored some second hand 555's of the front end of a D21 navara ages ago and they are still going strong even after being fitted to another truck after god knows how many km's they have out lasted 2 other sets of appco/repco/supercheap/bnt silly putty.

update...

this is my (rather large  ) list i've been working through haha

fix gearbox
new shifter boot
mount boost gauge
fix speedo & tach needles
swap steering surround
swap flares
swap gaurds & bonnet
mount inner gaurds properly
delete intercooler
swap bumper & bullbar
2wd steering mod
shock bushes
swaybar bushes
inner & outer cv boots
fit front bump stops
swap bash plate
fix radiator leak
door hinge pins
r/r door not opening
number plate lights
manual locking units not working
remove roof racks
2 1/2 inch dump pipe to fit up to existing
radio
recovery points f & r
spot lights

also for some weird reason someone decided it would be a good idea to remove the spare holder/tailgate thingy and mount/weld the spare onto the gas tank bash plate, then bog the holes where it was originally mounted, so had to grind the mount off and dig the bog out so i can remout the spare holder.

fair bit of work to do but im nearly there, still waiting on the gearbox so thats the next big mish

Managed to put the gearbox back in today by myself, 2 trolley jacks and a engine crane while lying on my back haha, didn't even pull the torsion cross member out....... What's the best gearbox oil to use 75/80 80/90? Or something else.

IN that case ensure you fill it to the bung on the side, then add 1.5 litres more through the gear lever.

as from factory the casting of the filler bung was too low and the oil level wasn't enough to reach all the bearings/shafts within the box.

cool cheers for that, i read that you need to put in 5.1 litres into the gearbox through the shifter hole and 1.5l into the transfer case..... am looking at using royal oil 75/90.....

cool did read something about atf in the transfer, my missus is gonna have an ocd attack when i ask for that though..... she works in parts (partmaster) and they all just look at the book and tell me im wrong haha, prime example was the 2wd mod, no one at her work could understand why i was doing it.

pic of hows she's looking, getting close now.

just need to fill gearbox/transfer, upper bumpstops, wheel alignment. then it just a case of using it and adding stuff to the wish list.

Post by miked21newbie »

i got my bits from partmaster as the missus works there, ...... use d21 terrano 4wd inners as outers and d21 navara 2wd inners as your new inners...... use the d21 2wd navara draglink/center link (whatever ya wanna call it).

these codes will work at bnt, autolign, and partmaster

d21 terrano 4wd inner tierod ends (to be used as your new outers) SE-4682 (these are 16mm left hand thread) x2

d21 navara 2wd inner tierod ends (to be used as you new inners) SE-4672 (these are 18mm right hand thread) x2

d21 navara 2wd crossrod (to replace the terrano cross rod) SC-4670 x1

you'll need to re-tap the adjuster that holds the two tie rods together as the 2wd inner are a 18mm right hand thread and the existing thread is 16mm right hand thread, the 4wd inners become your new outers and they are left hand thread once you've got all the bits in your hand it all becomes pretty obvious how it works...... buy those bits and if ya get stuck hit me up again and ill try my best to help ya out.

you will need custom adjusters as using short inners and outers leaves you wanting by about 100mm's

nah the 2wd inners are quite long and the 4wd inners are short, this is the factory adjuster.

although in saying that, you could use 4wd inners and 4wd outers and get rid of the longer 2wd inner, as you said though you would need a custom adjuster made up and threaded to suit...... if i bend the longer 2wd inners that are there im gonna look into that.......

still need to get another steering box and replace the idler arm and brace.

That's what ya sposed to do 4wd both ones both ends as the 2wd ones with the S bend in them to clear the draglink/pitman joints fold like a piece of paper.

ironically the image below is from a thread on this very site.
