Cheers.

CB radio
He doesnt know much about it, hes selling it on behalf of his nieghbour, her husband past away about 6 months ago, and shes selling it now. It used to be on his bighorn. It has Benelec NZ aerial, thats all he could tell me about it, ive asked him for the length and hes getting bak to me on that one. so ill get back to you on that, says its flexible, and looks like it has insulation tape wrapped round it, but it isnt insulation tape:)heh, sounds right.
He is going to test it this weekend , hook it all up and see if it has lights and makes noise.lol.and hopefully he can pick someone up on a channel to really make sure, otherwise i might get a cb which just lights up and makes noise.
20 km is a fair way. I have a held help ones, what frequency are they on?are they PRS?i dunno, so many abbreviations and frequencies!and they are good, im just after something which is cheap and has a bit more range as the held helds are good for 2-3 kms, then they get a bit scratchy(line of sight), my mates getting an AM one too, so ill have someone to talk too.
The held helds r good for getting out of the car and directing someone, and stuff though.

Sounds like its a goer. They key with handhelds is getting high power ones, the ones I have are 1W PRS (FM) ones and so far have got HH-Car working at 8km's

Radio
A lot of things need to taken into acct with radio performance.
Atmospheric conditions and how much "skip" is availabe at the time u are using your radio. Also the higher you can get, the better the range, wether the arial is correctly tuned to the set it is coupled with, u can check that by getting hold of a SWR meter. Back in the day when u needed a licence to use AM CB on the 26.500 range it was farily popular, but it is very quite these days. CH15 was at 26.500 and was the calling channel. I would still recommend having 1 in your vehicle as many long haul truckies still use AM CB on CH 11. Handy if cell phone flat or in a dead spot. I am still using AM CB in mine and has been very handy at times. Out of interest, mine is a GME TX404N, and the price over the last 10 years hasn't changed much, so I beleive they are still good value.
