no front nimber plate?

My 69 patrol is almost ready to go back on the road.
I am missing the front number plate but have the original rear plate.
My question is, legally do I have to have one? And if I do not where is the data or regulation to back that up as I know the wof will try to tell me I need one.
If I have to have one, will a sticker made by a sign maker to look like my original black number plate be legal? I really don't want to loose the original plate number and black plate.

You don't need the number plate for a WoF. But you will get pulled up by Police without one.
It is easy and cheap enough to just get replacement plates.

I had a old falcon that had been backed into damaging the front plate. I rang up and got replacement plates making sure to get the same numbers because i didnt want to end up with GAY123 type plates.
They sent me two plates out cost bugger all aswell.

Cant get replacement black plates with same member though. This still has matching numbers and original reg number.

So did they make new plates with the same number for you? Who did you contact for that? Were they black plates. My number is EM###, so never issued in white plates.

If your vehicle did not come from factory with a front license plate , then legally you do not have to fit one .
ie vintage cars / sports cars / old 4wd's etc etc
the info is on the NZTA web site if you dig for it .

However most police officers will pull you over and disagree ..... Even when you show them the documentation .....
And most petrol stations wont open the pumps up for you , if they cant see a plate either.

I relented in the end and fitted a front plate , just for less hassles sake .
Got mine through VTNZ - even got it in black to match the back .

1969 you need a front plate,apart from a special exemption for the e types , no car in nz that has been registered since black plates became legal can get away with one rear plate,the last ones where one plate was legal is the old yellow plates which havnt been legal since the 40s or 50s, you can make your own black and silver as long as the silver is reflective and the size of the background and letters match the original.

OK. This looks like the way I will have to go.
I rang 0800remake today and if anyone is interested they will remake your plates for $23.00/pair. Although it will be your current reg number it will be on a white plate.
For future reference, I will update this thread with the cost to get a sign maker to make me a reflective sticker so I can put it on a black painted piece of alloy.

a $23 set of replacement white plates with your current old rego number, blow a can of black satin paint over them, run the orbital sander over the numbers to expose the alloy and your just made yourself a genuine duplicate of your old black plates that'll pass any scrutiny

I did that on my car because it looks cool. Cost me 40 demerits and $300... Got done twice before I changed back. But they were new 3 letter plates so yea. Just saying
