WOF tire size woes...

Post by a80crewza »

Went in for a wof today, and failed on the account of my tires being over 5% larger than factory among other things. Cert plate has 15x10 and 33x12.5s from old owner... Wof place failed me because my rim/wheel combo didn't meet the cert and also because they were over 5% larger than OE   . I looked on the Kumho website (I have 315 KL71s on 16x8s), and the recommended rim width is 8-10". If I get a cert they should comply..? And should kill 2 birds with 1 stone (their issues with being 5% larger and not meeting cert plate)... :?: Is Don Hoff still the guy to see for cert in Christchurch? Whats the cost of a cert these days?

Cheers.

may not be quite as simple as handing over 500 bucks for a new lvvta plate your truck will have to pass the brake test if your running larger diameter tyres and sometimes that's not quite as easy as it seems especially if your 80 series is an earlier one with the smaller brakes, a new wof guy and a second set of road tyres that meets the lvtta plate specs are also other options to factor in

Are brake test standards for certs the same as wofs? Has passed many times before at other places not in Christchurch, so might be worth getting a different wof place. Any idea if I need to get truck re-certed if I just put factory rims/tires on it (currently says 33s on cert plate)??

brake test for cert and brake test at wof time are two different things, certifyer will attempt to do three hard stops in a row at openroad speed to ensure there is no brake fade, on a big truck with big tyres that's no easy feat.

By the sounds your truck is certified for 15x10 rims? and you have 16x8?
Your wof man is correct in failing you as vehicle must match description of cert plate to comply.
Circumference above OE in this instance is of no relevance.
However if circumference between your 16's and the 15's it was certed on then you could look into getting just a wheel cert change. Much cheaper than full cert ($50-$100?)
Doff Hoff would be the man to speak to.

Another (dodgier?) way is to borrow a set of the certed wheel/tyre combo? And fit them for WOF inspections...

My cert plate only specifies rim size (15x8) and nothing about tyres. (33x12.5x15)

My WOF guy was lamenting the other day about half of the forestry company Utes that come in for WOFs on pristine clean factory wheels, then you see them running round the place with bigger MT tyres on Steelies....

I guess the risk with that is if Mr Plod pulls you over and attempts a compliance check on your truck??

Thoughts anyone?
