Hi Folks
Surf with 220km on clock, had it from 105km. Never used any oil or water. EGR blocked, cat gutted. No catch can. INlet manifold cleaned out some time ago.
I've been using Valvoline Diesel extra in my 99 surf for quite some time now and has always been clean as a whistle with absolutely no oil use. WEll I just started to stretch the oil out to a 7000 change and just lately I went to 9000 without realising it, (lots of Km in a short time). When changing the oil I noticed what looked like very small (1-3mm) tannish coloured pebbles and lots of black carbonish friable grit. I did a couple of engine flushes and changed to Castrol GTX and started using a shed load of oil. I notice that the cam also looked to be not quite so smooth as the last time I was in there checking valve clearances, but maybe imagining that. Head area absolutely spotless, so I'm assuming no-one has dumped in a load of gravel, and my truck is very hidden away at a secure house so unlikely that that could have been done. I do have an ex wife though.
After another couple of changes the oil still has v small amounts of friable grit and the oil use has stopped by the looks. No more pebbly things.
I never realised that the diesel extra was not a JASO- DH-1 oil (it now is by the looks), but always knew it was a mid-ash oil. Of course the 1KZ-TE is supposed to have a high ash oil but those are hard to come by.
I always thought it ran better on the diesel extra but was I fooling myself? Is it a good oil?
So alternatives available here with DH-1 spec?
I was thinking give the gulf western J power a go if I can find it here?
Thoughts? Especially from those who service 1KZ-TE's all the time please!

Carbon buildup in the oil can be from a leaking injector, good idea to pull the sump and check out your pickup screen for blockages. To recon a set of injectors is under $400 for a 1kz.
Oil wise I have tested many of the oils available with a Timken test machine and found Total Rubia 7400 to take the most load, and it is also DHD-1
The spec sheets etc are all on the total nz website.
I also use an oil additive and have done for years, and tend to do oil dispersant tests to see how the oils perform. Extending your oil changes can be done safely with a bypass filter to remove contaminant buildup.

A leaking injector can't get into the oil on a 1KZ-TE. can it....???

Unburnt diesel (or pocket burnt) produces carbon in any diesel, common rail or otherwise. The carbon then bypasses the rings and ends up in the oil.
Normally get around 250ks out of a set of injectors so will be nearly due in yours. It only takes an off spray pattern from a worn tip to produce excess carbon in one pot.
Do you notice much black smoke when on it hard? Ie towing etc?

Hi floatingkiwi, sorry I can't answer your query but will offer my fifty odd years of mechanical experience and a lot of those years as a Diesel Mechanic. First I had to get the dictionary out (yes I'm old school) to see what Friable was
. My take on it is, unless some thing has been deposited in your engine . Diesel Oil has a higher detergent rating, maybe one of your oil packs had a higher rating and cleaned your engine, maybe the higher mileage over a shorter period meant you did a lot of hot running and this could cause all the gunk from 250k's to end up in the sump. I don't believe you have to much of a problem, to check it out Take a sample of your oil to your local Gough Agents (CAT'S) and get them to check it, we do oil sampling checks on a regular basis with our fleet and get some good information on what's happening inside, good for engines, transmissions and final drives . ----- If the injectors where getting worn you could get diesel wash and this could help deposit the gunk into the sump. Also take your oil filter off , see if you can borrow a filter cutter from any big workshop and inspect the element, Diesel bug in the fuel can also turn to gunk but this would show up in your fuel filters before the sump. Hope this helps, by the way I run a 1KZ and a 2LTE before that I've used allsorts of oils and grades with no signs of what you are describing, but I have witnessed it in engines I have stripped.

FITZY.

Thanks Fitzy
The black gritty stuff was certainly carbon combustion products from somewhere, which is odd because I've always maintained her with good regularity and oil had always been clean up to that point. No oil use between changes whatsoever.
The browny/tannish pebbles were very odd. I have heard that some contaminants can combine to form deposits like that but I only ever found a very vauge reference to that.
The material didn't come from my driveway anyway, I'm sure of that!! Never been to any workshop either.
I'm now trying to find a mid-high ash oil. I can't find any specs on the Valvoline diesel extra, even though the website now says it's JASO DH-1 the containers in repco/supercheap do not show that cert.

JASO DH-1 & GLOBAL DHD-1 are equivalent ratings. Shell rimula, penrite fx, total rubia etc all meet both these standards. Penrite is available at ripco, its mid ash and all the blah.
