The bargain terrano.

Post by brengunj »

Hey guys,
My name is Brendan from Oxford.
So I picked up a 1990 D21 Terrano powered by the TD27T fused to the all powerful auto Trans. Been sitting in a guys paddock for a year. Got a clean sheet warrant almost new 31inch all terrains and is quite tidy for 157kms. Not bad for 2k I thought. :D
So I went for a play last night and it decided that when I go from 4 low to 4 high it'll make an awful crunching sound. I'm in neutral and stationary.
Any ideas what that is?
Also when in 4wd or when stationary (2wd) and i have my foot on the brake the handbrake light comes on and stays on for about 5-10 seconds. Any ideas on that?
The brake resivoir is full and I bled the brakes when I got the vehicle.
Also anyone got one of those Haynes manuals for these thay they are willing to part with for some $$$? Thanks guys.

you need to be in park when changing gear in the transfer case. The transmission output shaft can turn when in neutral and cause a noise.

Brakeproblem: Check vacuum lines as that light also displays when you have a vacuum leak.

Transfer: Probably a dumb question but you're actually pushing down on the lever too when you switch between 4hi/lo? If you don't push down enough you will get a grinding noise (same as if it's not actually down into 4lo far enough). Only need to be in neutral & stationary to do it so no problems there! :D

Also welcome to the forum, you'll find plenty of worthwhile Terrano info here. Good place to start reading is on Lax's "Toughening Up WD21 Front end" thread

Sweet, I'll find out where those lines are and get working on checking those. Maybe I wasn't pushing down hard enough on the transfer. I'll try again tonight. Thanks for the welcome been trawling through here for a bit. Will definitely look up that thread.

Now has anyone used one of these snorkels? ?http://www.trademe.co.nz/954254014
Like the price but is it a you get what you pay for moment?

How much have people payed to get an exhaust tube snorkel made up for one of these?
Cheers

Welcome.
Bypass factory unit and fit external cooler for the automatic transmission would be pretty essential for continued reliability IMO.

handbrake light also acts as a service light on the brake master cylinder reivour. flush and change the brake fluid

with the auto the out put shaft of the trans needs to be stationary. this only happens with the trans in park... any other position the output shaft can rotate with the residual pressure of the oil within the clutchpacks in the trans when the transfer case is between 4 h and 4 l.
