PLEASE HELP 1KZ performance MODS QUESTIONS

Post by allys551 »

Hi i just got a kjz78 and love it, wanted to do performance upgrades to the motor - started with CAI. wanna do Dump pipe to Bigger Exhaust pipe. maybe straight pipe with a muffler i find the straight pipe a bit loud. also wanted to get a pyro gauge, but also discovered a EGT gauge what the hell is the difference? what gauges do i really need? oh yeah and what is a BOOST for the motor? is it like nitrous? stupid questions from a newbie.
PLEASE HELP

cheers all

pyro and EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature)gauge are the same thing.

Boost is the pressure that the turbo forces into the motor. When you ut your foot down, the diesel motor produces boost.(probably around 10 psi on a stock 1kz)
Boost is why a turbo motor makes more power than a similar, but non turbocharged motor.
you can increase this boost. Firstly, by doing a better flowing intake(CAI cold air intake)
Secondly by putting on a bigger diameter exhaust system, including an after market down pipe or dump pipe(the first section of exhaust straight off the turbo.)
3rdly, you can use a boost tee to bleed a little air off from the line that goes to the waste gate actuator on the turbo. This will delay the opening of the waste gate, which in turn will cause the turbo to push more boost into the motor.
Increasing the boost will generally increase power, but can also do damage if you overdo things, hence the EGT gauge to keep an eye on temps.
if you have a water temp gauge, an EGT gauge, and a trans temp one also if you have an automatic trans, you should have plenty of info.
Given you are a newbie, you should do lots of reading to make sure you understand things before you go modifying. That way you are likely to make better decisions, and not have mechanics take advantage of you.

@BlakeNZ - hope all is well, i read through your posts and found them very educational for me being a total newbie heehee. i was sayin in my previous post OK here we go - CAI installed, now going for
- Dump pipe/Exhaust.
- oil catch can.
- DPCHIP if they make one for my model or a Throttle controller
- fan to keep cool for radiator which was replaced with a bigger one.
- havent touched Diff. yet probably wont as im not really doing any SERIOUS offroading most dirt roads - highways
(now would an intercooler be too much), what i want to achive is fairly good running condition (no need for a race car) and for it to be to safe not run the risk of ruin the engine.

Also getting these gauges, if you could take a look at it and advice what i need or DONT need that would be great. maybe going overboard a bit :)
- water temp./ oil pres./ pyro/ amps/ boost/ trans temp./
- and a turbo timer
i have kept my rig fairly stock added 2" lift springs and shocks, running 33" on 15" wheels. (thinking of levelling the back out as the front dips just a bit.) if you have any suggestions please let me know ?
- maybe lowering block - didnt want to replace the new springs, as i just got them. OR maybe its just a stupid idea ...

Blake thanks for your advice again CHEERS

when you mod those engines you're modding them for reliability to get better longevity out of the weak cylinder heads, they go reasonably well in a standard form with a free flowing exhaust but they aren't a performance engine they're only a little 4 banger diesel so if you want significantly increased performance look at a repower or a faster truck :D
