Steering Box Strength

Post by HGR »

Just wondering if anyone know's how strong the bighorn steering boxes are. I've found this one on trademe http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/isuzu/auction-947271004.htm and it would fit my conversion really well but have no idea on the strength of reliability of it. Not worth the hassle if they're a pain. Any thoughts? Tyres will be 35" max on a solid axle.

Don't even think about paying that much for a second hand steering box!

Yeah Cheers Mehrts. Not planning on buying that one, just think the overall shape and style will work really well for a conversion that I have in mind. If they're strong enough to handle larger tyres and a bit of rough stuff then I'll pick one up elsewhere. That was the best photo I could find. Looks like a patrol box may work as well but I'll post that in the appropriate section.

Land cruiser fj,hj,bj 73,74 series all have rear facing pitman arms as well

They are strong enough. Although there will be plenty here that have broken one. But unless you go heavy commercial truck size you will break majority of boxes over time.
Just need to get a reasonably common box and have a spare just in case

I run 33in simexs with a front locker. Have broken cvs and tierods but the box is fine.

The input seals do like to leak on them, but the only one i have seen with any damage was one out of a truck that was dedicated and thrashed bush truck for 10 years, had a twisted shaft, still worked fine just couldnt be rebuilt
