Hi Guys
My new toy a 1rst gen Surf had been fitted with a 1Kzt-e engine with a R151 box. The transfer case has 4H and 4L shift. It has manual hubs and lock right locker in front diff. I need the truck to be an allrounder, daily driver as well as a weekend toy, I am aware that this will meen some compromises, and that is ok. I do understand that free wheeling the hubs meen no drive to the wheels but there is still drive to the diff. I am new ish to 4wd ing so my question is is this set up ok on the long run? as sometimes I travell a bit on black top to get to the playground, or shoud I fit a transfer case which is allowing a 2wd selection like the one in my other Surf? If so which one will fit?
I am new to posting so I may have posted this in the section,if so let me know.
All inputs are wellcome and appretiated.

R151 has 2wd/4wd. It is selected via a button on the transfer lever. Check that it has been wired in correctly

Re: R151 box, full time 4wd with manual hubs?
Hi
There is no selector button on the shifter. The shifter itself looks the same as in my other Surf, but it only has 3 pos: 4h, natual, 4l, is the 2wd selection shoul be in 4h pos with button operated? and I have forgot to mention it is a manual box. So my next questions:
- how can I id my box? Is there any markings I can look for? I was told it is a R151 but looks I have to be sure,
-how can I id my Transfer case?
- where are the wires shoud be running to / from? is there a site I can download wireing diagram? or/and a workshop manual for these boxes and t-cases?
Thanks

take some photos of the gearbox and transfer case.

The lever should give you hi range 2wd and then move to low range 4wd. The button on the gear lever selects 4wd when still in hi range.

Hi,thanks for the comments.I think this should be the selector. Now I only have to trace the wires and go from there.
And when I submit it I ll find out if I was succesfull posting images.

That thing hanging off the back of the transfer case with wires coming out is the 4wd-2wd selector motor. Is it wired up to anything? if so where do the wires go?.
If not it can easily be wired up with either a switch or relays, relays are safer for the motor as they use the motor limit switches.

That's the 2wd/4wd motor...no extra switch on your dash?
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

Hi
Yes I have a couple of "extra" swiches on the dash, problem 1 was I did not realised that this t case has an electronic component, now I need to find some gravel and make the wheels spin, to see if any of them make it 2wd. Then I like to trace the wireing to make sure it is all good. what size relay shuod it have?
Thanks

Re: R151 box, full time 4wd with manual hubs?
Mine is wired up with two changeover relays , using the limit switches on the motor as like Dan said above. You should be able to hear the actuator moving If you turn the ignition on and operate the switches.

Re: R151 box, full time 4wd with manual hubs?
why not just jack a rear wheel up ( or both if you have an LSD ) and turn a wheel to turn the drive shaft and see if the front drive shaft turns at the same time.now I need to find some gravel and make the wheels spin, to see if any of them make it 2wd.
Cheers
