Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
Don't like the look/design of ARB bumpers (nor the cost), so i thought I'd have a crack a designing & building a bumper that better suited my needs. Still not finished but progressing slowly. The Hilux is getting bars added to the top but might just leave the Surf as is.
Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
Nice - Good looking bars - awesome stuff
Oh, and welcome to ORE - where you from? (You can add your location in your profile settings - save's people having to ask/guess)
Cheers,
Jay

Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
Cheers Jay, will try to get my head around the site & work out how to update my profile.
Living in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay. Driving a fairly standard 1kz-te LN130 Surf. Putting the bar on it, have a 9500lb winch ready to bolt on and then plan to put a lokka in the front as it is a bit 'soft' compared to my old Isuzu MU and won't get me half the places that the Mu used to take me offroad (I also put a lokka in my Mu).

Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
And 1st bar got mounted on a dirty 'ol Safari that I lifted around 5" to squeeze in a set of 35's. Making it strong enough for a 20,000lb winch was fun
Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
Very cool dude... some nice fab work there for sure!
And the locker's a good idea...once you've had them, its hard to be without them huh!

Looking to buy one, torn between another auto locker (which was great but had it's quirks like self centering steering) or an air locker. What have you got there?

Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
A couple of concerns I have with the bumpers I'm making.
1) Airflow to radiator, have driven around and temp gauge does not change. Are these Toyotas prone to overheating
2) Visibility to winch rope drum through a Hawse fairlead (synthetic rope), will I be able to see enough to stop rope from bunching?

Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
if you get bunching on the winch drum is it easy to reach in from above to un-tangle it?
i used to Cruise, now i PATROL
Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers

I've put a bit more design into the Toyota bumpers, they are stronger & lighter

Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
those bumpers are cool dude, what program do you use to test strength etc?
im looking at making one up for my terrano, obviosly a bit different in the way that they attach to vehicle.

I use Autodesk Inventor Pro to model it in 3d and then run it thru FEA analysis to see where the strengths and weakness are and change design to make strong but light weight. I also have a D21 terrano here but it should be leavin soon, sold.

I use Inventor every day at work and occasionally use the built in FEA package (generally for stuff like this that I'm buildin at home). It's not too hard to learn if you're mechanically minded.
Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
had a minor play with FEA in solidworks..... I'm old school, still do most of my CAD in ortho 3d was just too slow and the version of solidworks was a trial
can't use that for business stuff
Nice to see it in action, good for prompting me to play more with it... well maybe just 3d cad first....
Cheers Reece

Cool work mate!
Out of interest do you have screen capture of the stress points? This is more important than displacement.
Design looks good though, and I also love CAD/CAM/FEA. I get to play with our work software to build highspeed centrifugal and roots style superchargers.

I'll do a screen capture of stress tomorrow. Obviously the highest stress was around the bolt holes.
Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
Hi All. I'm Riaan from Botswana. ARB Bumpers are also so expensive here no one can afford it. Does any one have step files (.dxf) for a steel bumper for a surf ? I have a cnc plasma and bending machine available here. I have a 3RZ 2.7 Gen 3 surf. Thank you.
Re: Homemade Hilux/Surf Bumpers
I do all of my CAC/CNC in cardboard, I really should learn some of this computer type design
