Terrano TD27T alternator swap

Post by D21terrano »

Hey, I'm thinking of turning my daily (d21 TD27T terrano) into more of a 2 seat camper. Good on gas and easy enough to fit a mattress in the back, but the stock alternators are shocking. I know Mike Singer (one of the best, if not the best, high output alternator makers in the world) and he won't touch the stock alternator case. He usually usually a factory case and changes all the internals.

I've got a stupidly good alternator from Mike - totally overkill. 320 amp model (180A idle, 340A peak). I was going to sell it through my business but my alt is so bad I'm thinking of using it in the Terrano. But the stock alt has a vacuum pump.. could I simply change the alt mount and put in the new alt and not worry about the vacuum pump? Or will I have problems elsewhere because I've taken out a 50 or 70cc vacuum pump?

If not there's more than enough room to mount a second alt but that would limit the amount of batteries I could have under the bonnet and I'd rather not do that. And that makes the whole belt system more complicated and I don't really want to go there.

you will need the vacuum pump for your brake booster, if you are so inclined you can source the timing chain cover from the later TD27ETI and run the vacum pump seperate as it is located underneath the injector pump on the later model TD27.

Sorry to thread hack...

But has anyone upgraded from the stock diesel d21 alternator and still been able to keep the vacuum pump on the back?

I understand you can get something like this from the states but look at the price.... http://www.4x4parts.com/i-18979493-mean ... nator.html

Surely there must be someone out there who has upgraded by way of bolt on from another vehicle or some one that has upgrade the internals to allow higher output.

Cheers Pete

RD28 alternators are 80 amp.

i think some early 90's 4d56 pajero's had pretty beefy alternators too, think the pajero super select 4d56t i sold a while back had a 110 amp with vacuum pump on the rear and Vbelt pulley
