2008 ford ranger

Post by allmud »

Looking at buying a cab plus 08 ranger 4x4
I don't do a lot of hard offroading now .
It will be my tow car for my quad jetski and get firewood plus take the dogs out. Still want to be able to play if needed tho
The one I'm looking at is a ex power core one so well serviced and good KS and cheep lol
Is there anything bad I need to lookout for ?
Thanks in advance

guy at work has an 08, always in workshop due to faulty sensor or similar, truck mechanically is fine, goes well, but is probably closer relative of a range rover then a Ford F series or pick up.

Ironically the mada BT50 is the same truck underneath but doesn't suffer these issues.

If its a manual ensure the there is no drive train loud vibration when foot flat in all the gears and shudders on take off. Brother in law bought one and it vibrates like rattle gun at 1800rpm and shudders on takeoff, I suspect the dual mass flywheel is either worn or has been replaced with a single mass flywheel that has not been matched properly.
Check for wandering steering/dead spot in the steering, this is a common problem and can be fixed by tightening the lash adjuster on the top of the steering box.
Rear brakes shoes swell (or something like that) causing them to be to strong and lock up before the fronts (dangerous). I adjusted the rear brake load compensator to make this better.
Make sure he manual gearbox has ATF (factory specification) in it as normal gear oil makes them very hard to down shift into 2nd and 1st when cold.
Synchros on the manual gearbox might start to go at around 200000km and some have faulty lubrication causing early shaft/bearing failure, listen for a whine I suppose. From memory it was about $3000 to rebuild the gearbox with the lubrication mod to stop the bearing failure.
Ensure the injector seals were replaced when the cambelt was done as when I changed the cambelt 200000km I found one leaky seal. It looks like it had just started leaking.
I checked the play in the turbo when I did the cambelt at 200000km and it was mint so I don't for see any issues here.
These vehicles handles well and the engine has a really nice power curve with lots of low down torque but being a Ford are built a little cheaply. Still a nice vehicle as a daily driver and good on the gas with the common rail diesel and VGT.

Good Utes, good honest performers, tow well, bit firm riding and front seats are average for long trips for me
SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods ;)

think that goes for all of them dunnit? hard arsed load carrying springs that only carry 2/5th's of F all and uprite awkward seats to make the double cab look roomy.
my rodeo's the same.
