How much cash are you willing to put up as well as your r50?
I have a fully worked nothing left to do lwb turbo liquid to air intercooled, pto winch, lifted, fully barred, full leather interior etc etc etc that I might let go....for the right price.
And where are you located? I am in Tauranga.

either way you will have to spend some serious coin to get a n/a td42 to get up and go, as the ETI models QD32/TD27 put up more stonk then even a factory turbo td42.

injector pump modofication manifolds turbo charger water oil lines tuning intercooler piping, then there is no garuntee your NA block will like being turbo'd' after all these years.oh did i mention certification?

then there is that feeling you get when you drive the your newly purchased late 80's early 90's saf for the first time after driving a later model more responsive diesel and think wtf have i done....

a standard td27 eti is only down 9kw on power compared to a td42-t and a qd32 is the same as a td42-t unmodified, then there is the age vs wear factor... a 80's designed td42 made in the early 90's (tired) vs a late 90's computer controlled (more effiecent not so tired) qd/td....you get the idea. mod the plunger and swap out the computer controlled pump for a mechanical one , ball bearing turbo wind the fuel in boost and a 98 mistral will still eat up the ground faster then a safari. i know, i own one. people laugh at a mistral...not laughing after there arse gets hauled by a mistral.

i guess what im saying is buy the best you can afford, it'd be worth getting a personal loan for tgaguy's already built truck as you'd be going backwards into the unknown with a lesser specd truck with no know history.

His is all done ready to roll, and i can garuntee he's spent more doing it up then it will get sold for, that's the nature of the game.

So Crash has just given you HIS impression of turboing a Safari albeit it in a negative manner!
There are plenty and plenty of Safari's that were n/a and have been turboed with NO issues whatsoever.
Crash should know that even the Australians have been adding hair dryers to their TD42'S for years and running anywhere
from 12-18psi and 20-30psi (with pump mods and no engine mods) without the TD42 suffering or falling over dead.

A standard fuel pump will support enough fuel for upto 12-15psi boost and that's about it which is still an improvement...you don't need to spend
gazillions to get the old girl to move but like Crash said...the more you spend the better the result.
A clean radiator will be fine, the TD42 acceptable running temp according to Nissan is 92degC and the Aussies regularly see 100 - 106degC
when on their trips.

Look up the "turbo comparisons thread" on Patrol4x4.com for verification if need be.
Factory turbo Nissans are still low power units in all honesty and aren't even in the ball park compared with an after market turboed td42.
That's why so many people turbo them and continue to do so.

Yeah plus in terms of the whole performance/acceleration thing, you have to consider that the safari weighs well over a ton more than the terrano, plus the terrano has lower differential gearing.

But if we're going to shit on about engine swap choices, Direct injection would be the go. BD30 would piss all over the QD32 and give about double the gas mileage.

That one Saf that tgaguy is selling looks fricken ideal though. If I had a couple of young children and was looking for a safe family touring vehicle/off road machine, I would probably buy it. It's really hard to find a safari that has been well looked after, unmolested and is mostly standard, let alone in that colour.

I have never owned one but have driven and worked on a few, onroad and unmodified I was blown away by how nice and predictably they handle, considering the massive amount of unsprung weight in the front end.

They obviously put a lot of thought into the suspension design of the front end, but like anything there are compromises. The Nissan radius arm design lows for about 6" of wheel travel but onroad with the swaybar in, it handles better than a G Wagon or P38 Range Rover. Pretty commendable when you consider how much weight is in the front of the vehicle. Shit, the engine alone weighs around 400kg apparently. To put it into context an all alloy Rover V8 weighs 150kg.
