new instrument cluster
hi ORE
I'm sick of my useless and often inaccurate instruments so I'm planning on building a new instrument in the place of the old one.
The new one will pretty much directly replace the old one with a 85mm Speedo, 52mm volt, fuel, oil press, water temp. I'm not yet too sure where I'll get a tacho from yet as I'd like to get a 4000rpm one, perhaps about a 70mm gauge if I can find one.
At the moment I plan on using a sheet of 5mm perspex for the dashboard backing plate and painting it black to suit the rest of the stock dashboard. Im yet to figure out a solution to all the warning lights, as I have to accommodate glow plug, 4WD, Stabi bar, OD, temp, oil press, fuel separator, indicators, hi beam, hand brake, door open, seat belt, and low charging voltage.
Does anyone have any ideas for this and where I can get the gauges from. I'm wanting celsius, km/h, psi. Also where can I get a 4000 rpm tacho from. I don't particularly want anything flash, or modern. Simple gauges work better for me haha
cheers in advance

I've done this...it adds up real quick . depending on weather street legal and needing a odometer.
Also watch how far back guages protrude,I had to step my cluster forward to get gauges to fit.

Re: new instrument cluster
When you say street legal, does an alternative set of gauges need to be certified? And I though the only legality with the speedo was that it had to work and be roughly accurate.
Re: new instrument cluster
A lot of the cheaper gauges I found didn't have a odometer display..I could also have been blind and not looking at the right spot.

Re: new instrument cluster
oh right. the odometer was something I was still trying to work out. Would it be a good idea to just get a hubometer? Possibly have it adjusted to the current milage, or just note the current milage and add it to the hub reading?skidmark wrote:A lot of the cheaper gauges I found didn't have a odometer display..I could also have been blind and not looking at the right spot.
EDIT: I do keep a log book for milage and servicing, so I wouldn't have a problem with a hubometer. The only issues I could see would be with the resale. Would the hub meter have any troubles with light offroading.

What's the model truck you want to fit it into? Petrol or diesal?

its a Y60 Nissan Safari with a TD42 diesel engine. It is a full mechanical engine (no ECU or any of that fancy stuff).skidmark wrote:What's the model truck you want to fit it into? Petrol or diesal?

Looks good mate, and thanks for the site. They have everything I'm looking for
All you need for a warrent is a speedo right, and high beam warning light? Other than that I can't find any other requirments from a dashboard. I am putting everything in but just not sure what is actually required.

Re: new instrument cluster
aw well. I've found a speedo that looks good with the rest of the gauges Im looking at, but it doesnt have a odo so I might just look at getting a hubo, making note of the current KM's and go from there.
The gauges I'm looking at are:
52mm temp 40 - 120 degrees C
52mm oil press 0 - 75 psi
52mm volt meter 18 - 32v
52mm fuel
80mm tacho 4000rpm
100mm speedo 120km/h.
They should all fit in (quietly hoping) Im making a mock up today to check

right, cause the ruc would suddenly go from 230000 to 000000. i don't know if the nzta has the capacity to handle such sorcerymudlva wrote:I think theres a form that you fill in to state old ks and new odo ks so the tax ticket can be ajusted accordingly
