winch setup

Thaught id share how ive got my winch set up.

Quite often iI just shoot out for a quick tikitour and find myself out somewhere by myself stuck, Late at night, (usually on a sunday) or if i do have someone with me ill be the only vehicle.
So over the years i seem to carry more and more s....t with me for any scenario ive come across.

So ill throw this scenario at ya.

steep clay track with a layer of pine needles over it, Old hilux doesnt have the herbs to get up so you slap your nux pedal down and the truck slides back down untill theres enough build up of pine needles behind the wheels it stops you.open the door and your looking at the top of a punga tree. gotta winch up then chain yourself to a tree while you run the winch rope out again (to stop the truck sliding back down) and repeat this 10 times till you reach the top of the hill.

The big trouble with all this was the wire rope (cant afford the flash rope, and the stuff ive got works) binds up in one side of the spool so only about 5m of winching can get done before you have to hop out and unwind it, to wind it back on properly.

Have my winch running through two pulleys one on a solid shaft that turns and sways to let the rope feed properly (not perfect but still works) and the lower pulley to send the rope out in the right direction again. Which is from wheel to wheel really. Cause not all winching is straight ahead,

its a heavy setup and it destroys the entry angel but its a family wagon not a full blown offroad machine.

Some interesting engineering there bud.

Would be interesting to see how it would survive with nose burried deep in the mud thou.

Ive seen the fairlead with an extra mid section roller where as the winching progresses the co removes the sliding pin and roller to allow the rope to full the empty section. Doesnt lay it on as nice as yours would tho

Nice one Bruce. Looks like a good solution to a common and frustrating problem.

Did you consider mounting the winch under your tray with a meter or so to your first rope guide? (this way the rope always lays nicely) or was it to much of a mission for guides with the steel rope?
