first surf build.
Re: first surf build.
Just tell him you changed it to a 106 one, bet he doesnt check.
Funny story i heard was that he was failing people for cut and shunts on steering shafts, but he was sending people to a local engineering shop to have them done "properly" which entailed resplining ect... one of my mates got it done and upon picking it up noted the new weld????
When he questioned it, he was told thats what they were doing on all of them. Cut and weld..........
Just bullshit to be honest.......
Thats why ive given in and built a transporter trailer

Re: first surf build.
Yea to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't check..if one doesn't pop up that's what I'll say. This will be my first vehicle I've put through a cert so still learning the cert ropes as suchMadaz wrote:Just tell him you changed it to a 106 one, bet he doesnt check.

Re: first surf build.
He specifically asked about and looked at mine. I was too honest. That said, he didn't make it hard. He told me to bring in the selection of parts that I had and he would see what was possible. In the end he just got me to chop one bit shorter, slide them inside each other, drill it and put a roll pin through (it was a collapsible section). Personally I thought the solution that I planned (which involved a weld) was a superior solution but at the end of the day he is the cert giver. So I just did it his way. I planned to swap it out for a welded one later but never got to it.

Re: first surf build.
Yea I'm in the same boat..have already mentioned it's a cut and weld... really? I thought a proper cut and welded would be better than a roll pin.
Just like I've seen a few hotrod through work with the d shaft held in buy a grub screw..much worse in my opinion

Re: first surf build.
Yeah it would be.
I bored mine out then slipped the new one in it, made it size for size, welded round the end of it then cross drilled it, put a pin through it and plug welded that in.
F--k the roll pin idea, their 4x4s, not street driven hotrods.....

Those stops going in the front?
Re: first surf build.
Yes they will be in front.im 99% sure they'll fit in there...

Re: first surf build.
Just changed rear springs over to 4 inch barstard. ..those are certainly solid.as with everything custom nothing is straight forward and will need to remake retaining clamps.cut some meat off the top ones they fit now.but lowers to be remade.
Looks to be sitting bascally level atm. Still have to add a spear tyre yet.also looks like it should still fit out garage door

Re: first surf build.
Some holesaw ing some grinding some clearance ing of turbo and bumps are in... one of the bumps had a knock to the valve cap in transit and lost any pressure that was in it..need to get a nitrogen chuck to fill them up proper... jimmed up a filler with a tyre inflater (conveniently carry a nitrogen bottle in my work van....)

Re: first surf build.
Are they touching at ride height?
Re: first surf build.
Nope about 60 odd mm clearance a little more would be better but I don't want to lift it any higherMattman wrote:Are they touching at ride height?

Re: first surf build.
Very nice. 4in of up travel is all good.
Re: first surf build.
Got a bit more done.
Fitted a ln106 steering shaft, it's marginally too long but it's in and should be allgood.
Went back to handbrake to nut out the cable, as like everything else she's a custom piece. First half is surf with the factory adjust cut in half so it pulls straight. Then shortened the outer housing and made a new cable end.. getting the old boy to spin up a lug to crimp on to the cable then hopefully it holds
Also only just drives out garage...rubs left rear corner because it lifts a bit in drive. Backs in fine tho.

Re: first surf build.
Spent all day doing a cashie wiring up a boat but dad made me a new cable end so crimped that on.. need to adjust the pivot point to reduce the lever travel as its just tightening at full lever movement.

Re: first surf build.
Cage is off.. had to cut a couple of small tabs off but weren't too critical anyway.. cage is now almost fully welded..need to pull sliders off and finish thoose and paint both and resemble..oh and almost outa gas for my tig....
Cage isn't as heavy as I was concerned,I can pick it up off the ground by myself so allgood.

Top job on how your exo cage fixes to your bull bar

Re: first surf build.
Cheers dude, also a 12mm bolt up the bottom tube where it butts against it..should hold up there.
One thing I didn't quite thibk about was removing it,wasn't bad with gravity on my side . assembly could be fun

Re: first surf build.
Will you ever need to take it off again?
Re: first surf build.
All going to plan no I hope not..so probably could just weld it solid...will see how it holds up otherwise I'll glue it all togetherMattman wrote:Will you ever need to take it off again?

Re: first surf build.
I made my original one unboltable. Never unbolted it.
Just weld it. I know you have a 5 inch weld undoer.

Imagine if you could just put the welder in reverse and it sucks it back up againCheckerhead wrote:I made my original one unboltable. Never unbolted it.

Awesome build man. There's a few people watching this, even if no-one comments all the time... I'm looking forward to seeing this get muddy!
Re: first surf build.
Reverse welder would be bloody handy.lol
Cheers, that comment was a bit of my weird humor, wasn't meant to be too serious.. but cheers everyone I'm looking forward to get it dirty too

Re: first surf build.
Cage is back on...welding the inside caused it to pull in had to stretch it out a bit to get it back round the truck. Few scratches but she'll be right
Whipped handbrake lever off and found it easier than expected to change ratio.drill two spot welds and a 12mm hole and weld her back up
Can see how much further I moved it overmodified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....
