how do i get this out?

Post by mudsurfv6 »

changing surf sump pan from front sump to rear sump to clear prado diff.

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=43405

need to get the plug out that I need to put a new union in for new dipstick but its in there really tight.

I've had vice grips on it and its turned a bit. put a cut off screwdriver up inside it and hammered but doesn't want to budge. don't say heat because I've no way of doing it, apart from a lighter.

that's the new one.

thought about just drilling a hole up inside one already in there but then why would they supply a new one. the dipstick tube has to seal inside top.

Looks like a press fit and that you almost have it out to the point where it tapers off.
Go and grab yourself a can of freeze spray , cant remember exactly what its called .

Freeze and shrink the plug , opposite of heating the block around it

CRC Penetr8 freeze off spray is what I've used in the past with great results for dealing with seized components!

U probably know this but they were a cool vehicle, but USA only. It was theyre bridge gap while they designed the 1st gen tundra for the U.S. market.

Loving your build thread by the way. keep it up!

You have the sump off so bash it out with a drift from underneath. It's pressed in not screwed in.

I've tried with a cut off screwdriver so that its flat on the end not pointed. its not a very big hole in middle. maybe I'm not hitting hard enough. whats a drift?

Get a punch with the diameter 0.1mm to 0.5mm smaller the small end of that part and smack it out from underneath upwards. It's just pressed in lightly but might be a little corroded in. You'll have to take the splash place off first.

It's just something that goes between the thing you are trying to hit and your hammer, like your sawn off screwdriver ; )
If your screwdriver is a close fit like Churchill said hit it harder!

half a can of crc penetr8 freeze spray and a heap of harder hitting and its out. now I have to figure out how to get the other one in, its straight below the engine mount. might have to hold engine up elsewhere and take mount off. even then not much room below manifold.

Keep the new bit in your freezer till you need it, the smaller it is the easier it will fit.

Yep good advice, some aircraft rivets are cooled in liquid nitrogen before use, so as they expand when they warm up, they form a tighter fit in the hole.

new fitting in. was way easier than getting old one out. there is a bolt for mount in the perfect spot to lever off, started with a tyre iron then moved onto a 1/2 meter wrecking bar which had the perfect flat spot on end to sit on bolt & bend just in the right spot to sit on the union and with my shoulder under the trailing arm it just pulled straight in. the freezing must have helped and hopefully now its warmed up it will be really tight.
