80 series advice please!

Post by churchill »

Hi guys, I'm looking at an 80 series cruiser for a tow vehicle to tow a caravan. I'm eyeing one up at the moment but it has 300000km on the clock. It's a 1997 so has the 1HD-FT and I'm wondering what would be the average life expectancy of one of these engines and what repairs would I be expecting to do soon assuming an average maintenance regime by previous owners?

At 300k cambelt due
I personally know of 4 24vavle with 500+ks on clock still going strong
Just talked my mate into buying one with 400k on the clock for towing his boat
It's had a transcooler added and had a trans rebuild at around 370ks
If it ain't got trans cooler get one especially if it's tow wagon

Interesting, original engines on the 500000km vehicles?

When do the injectors and pumps need doing?

Yeah orginal engines
Not sure on pump,I brought my 80 with 480ks with toyota service history and no mention of pump rebuild.
It's had the injector lines from pump to injector replaced at 295ks
Wouldn't hurt to get injectors serviced,I thought about it but it runs mint.

97 the pump should be fine. All lc trans need full over haul between 250-300k yes they may go for longer but the lock up starts to glaze then charnobles taking the complete box out. More so if its been towing.
Also fit the absolute biggest trans cooler that you can get in in.
If in ak talk to otahuhu tranmissions. Tony knows lc trans.
