80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
hi just looking for a new winch for my landcruiser after getting stuck in the weekend and the factory winch stalling and locking up what would be the best winch for it to replace the factory winch? or can i get the factory one up graded?
Re: 80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
buy yourself a snatch block and do a double line pull mate no point cooking your winch trying to pull one of those busses out

Re: 80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
we tryed that but still didnt work at all the truck as on the chassis rails in mud and to get snatched out from the rear
Re: 80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
we tryed that but didnt even budge the truck abit as the winch kept stalling and had to get snatched out from the rear
Re: 80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
Get the factory one serviced, I dragged a hook for a day 7-8 hours on a friends 80 one day, it pulled and pulled all day long! I was very impressed by the factory winch and would be my pick of low mount winches.

80 series winches are pretty damn good
if you are wanting to flick it off I am sure there will be plenty of folks lining up to buy it off you
Sometimes you are just stuck too damn good and will have to try different tactics

Are you sure that the winch was the problem and not the batteries? you need two good batteries to get the best out of those winches. If you batteries are old they may well be the problem,]. stock 80 winch should drag it up hill on the diffs with out a problem.

I have had 2 80 series with factory winch's and this was common on both of them... the 2nd I had completely rebuilt, and still the same thing kept happening - last straw was when I was alone, and the winch stalled while under massive load and wouldn't reverse - ended up very carefully having to tap the pin out on the hook - not fun. I replaced with a 12000 lb Runva from http://www.winch.co.nz and have never had an issue - it just keeps pulling, and will always reverse when asked!.
Like others have said, some seem to love the factory winch's and they fetch a pretty decent price on TM... Maybe I've just dud's?!?!

It's not a servicing issue. It is known design fault that if you can stall them under load the brakes can lock on. (So I am told by a few reliable people)
Not true of the Toyota "high mounts", only the low mounts. That said they are supposed to be a great winch, just make sure you never stall it. I know a few people who have ditched them for this very reason.
If you're keen to give it away though...I could live with that burden.

Bringing up an old topic. But guess what happened to me yesterday ah....
Broke me pto winch rope thought all good pull out the l.c. lekky winch rope. Medium rate pull but throw in a pully block just to be certain.
Ya can guess what happened next ah.
Rope under full load side coming out of hole and then NOTHING!!!!!!.
Mate had to turn round and pull me out with his pto and all said it was not a hard recovery.
So now do im a bit lost on what to do
Stay l.c. lekky
Go runva
Go super winch
Go warn
Or mod the l.c. unit but if its the brake mech thats the problem then repower isnt going to fix the problem!!

I would think that the break pads that lockup might need replacing
they do wear and what happens seems to be because what I think the break pads out of spec ive got the fsm of it here if needed

I brought a runva for my 80 and was planning on replacing it further down the trackmudlva wrote:Bringing up an old topic. But guess what happened to me yesterday ah....

It's actually been a good winch especially when you consider the price
Free spool better than other two winches mentioned and outlasted my mates superwinch.
After 2 years of abuse I pulled it down and internals were sweet
There was bit a moisture in it so my advice would be to silicon as well as gaskets and put a breather on it
You can always go 2up later on too..
Re: 80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
Didn't think they were as expensive as that, not from force4 anyway. A low mount viper is around $5.5k, $8.5k will get a full race spec twin motor hornet, with bow2 motors
Think phill is the only NZ agent? We have a lot of their product on the comp truck, and love the Red winch, but agree, it's a lot of missed KFC and Beer, to save for one.
The other much cheaper option, would be one of Phil's Novawin winch's, way cheaper and every one that has an electric one seems happy. Plenty of pull on a single line pull, and easy on battery's, just not racing speed fast.
Warren, will have cheaper options too.

Couple of mates use novawin winch and free spool ain't great which sucks big time when your trying to pull it out while walking up a muddy hill.

Yeh the freespool on the novawin sucks balls, good winch though... We had our 80's bogged in pretty hard and she just kept pulling, but trying to freespool up a muddy hill was just diabolical
Re: 80 Series landcruiser winch? whats good for it
That dual motor Hornet is a nice winch.
