Kzj78 factory rear diff locker problems
Hey fellas, I've got a 1994 sx prado with the factory rear locker, but having issues with it engaging. when you flick the switch in the cab (with 4wd all engaged) the light just flickers on and off. I have looked under the truck and all the wiring etc is all intact, nothing seems to be out of place. any ideas on what it could be?

I think you need to be in low range for it to work. and if you have after market hubs fitted you need the Hub lock Switch in.

You can defeat the 4WD bit by shorting out a pin on the locker controller from memory.... Did it to mine.
Here is a good write up for a retro fit.... And may help you work out how they work and trouble shoot yours.

A quick copy and paste of the safety features.
The locker ECU comes with two built-in safeties. One safety requires you to be traveling below 5mph for the locker to engage (once engaged, there is no speed limit). The second safety requires you to be in 4LO. To disable the 4LO safety, you have to cut the '4WD' line, which is pin #8 (blue/red) on the ECU, and ground it. The locker will now work in 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. To disable the 5mph safety, you do the same thing, but with the 'SPD' line, which is pin #10 (green/orange). I chose to disable the 4LO safety while leaving the 5mph safety intact. Refer to the previous diagrams for pin locations.
Cheers Calvin

Re: Kzj78 factory rear diff locker problems
G'day,
You need to verify if the locker motor is working for a start. As Kelvin said apply 12v directly to the motor pins,

Jack (and axle stand) one wheel up so you can ensure the diff engages when locked.
If motor and diff are locking and light still flashes, then look at the plunger switch on the diff head itself. If this fails to indicate that the diff is locked, the locker ECU will never know and the dash light will continue to flash even when locked.

Re: Kzj78 factory rear diff locker problems
Quite common problem is the magnets are only glued to the housing of the motor. With age the glue lets go letting the magnets drop against the winding, shorting and burning out. If you catch it soon enough the magnets can be glued back in place. Another issue I heard of but not on mine, is a nylon bush in the base of the housing at the end of the motor shaft that wears out and the shaft moves enough that the brushes dont contact properly. ECU in the passenger kick panel also died on mine. An auto sparky replaced it with 3x relays wired dont ask me how but it all works fine. (i dont do electrics - the electric smoke keeps escaping when I play with them, bloody hard to keep it inside the wire I find)

I've had my magnets fall off before and also had the gears seize together with rust. Both very easy issues to fix, just take them apart, fix problem, relube and put it back together wih some new seals if needed.
