I replaced my Challengers glow plugs in December, found today that 3 of the 4 have burnt out!
I spent the extra cash at the time and replaced them with genuine Mitsubishi ones 75 odd bux a pop.
(insert 4 letter word here) ...
Any one had this issue before? I'm thinking maybe sensor issue? Ideas?

Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
I had an old Merc years ago which burned out glow plugs real quick & I traced it to a bad engine earth.
Might be worth checking

Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
Have had the same issue with mine. It's just a mitsi issue unfortunately
Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
Check your earths like weemsy mentioned, any volt drop will hurt the plugs badly.
Look for heat affected or corroded connections in the whole circuit from battery, relay, plugs and earth.

Get the temp sensor checked, they crap out and will continue to glow for too long and burn out in no time.

Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
Thanks guys, your dead right. Was the temp sensor.
Have gone with an after market plug system to confinue to pulse for a few seconds after starting. Should hopefully do the trick!

Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
I have a 2000 2.8l done 170ks and had this problem at 140k. It was my own fault for changing the oil from castrol gtx diesel to Valvoline diesel oil. It was coughing plus blowing white smoke on startup. Long story short new glow plugs a moreys additive for 5000km and swapped back to castrol - the oil was the main factor I have no doubt here. The gtx has been used since new and well don't go near Valvoline diesel products. It runs and starts perfectly now. Beware of diesel mechanics who try to spin up a storm with leaking fuel seals, dud temperature sensors, dud injectors, water in the fuel, fuel bug in the tank_the list goes on, good mechanics you can trust are bloody hard to find in Auckland I forgot to add that atimer was added in amongst this which has helped but not absolutely sure it was the clincher in the whole scenario
Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
The oil causing the issues would be very unusual. Faulty injectors and burnt glowplugs and faulty sensors are very common issues.
Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
I might add we went through 1/2 a dozen glow plugs in the 20000km between 140k and 160k, nothing seemed to stop the plugs failing. The timer....well hard to tell whether it was a factor by bypassing the factory glowplug system.Mattman wrote:The oil causing the issues would be very unusual. The oil was the last resort after consulting numerous garages, hours online trying to get some way forward. The Moreys didn't seem to make a difference initially but may have contributed something. I was headed down the track for some
big bills for the fuel pump for starters. I am getting a compression test done on the motor tomorrow now its running good see what this looks like.
Re: 4M40 96 Challenger Burning out glow plugs!
Had compressions done 400,400,390,390 all good - this wagon is staying in the building
