Help sourcing (non-standard) radiator fan for Terrano TD27T

Post by kmb »

Hi all

I purchased a new water pump / clutch assembly for my '91 Terrano TD27T a few years ago. After fitting the pump, and attempting to refit the existing fan I discovered that the bolt spacing on the new clutch housing was different, and my old fan would not fit. I couldn't afford to leave the truck off the road so I just figured I'd buy a new fan too to match the new pump - so I left the fan off for the time being and just used it without one. And its been that way ever since (!). I always imagined it would be easy enough to get hold of a suitable fan, and every now and then I look around, but it has proved impossible to date. All the fans I've seen sold for this model of Terrano are the same as my original fan that does not fit (143mm BCD / 450mm overall diameter). So obviously this is some sort of non-standard pump/clutch - probably designed for a different model but sold to me incorrectly as a Terrano part? Anyway, I'm determined to finally get this sorted once and for all. This "new" clutch housing I have has a 4-bolt pattern with BCD of 134mm. In all regards other than the BCD it looks just like the old clutch housing (though I no longer have this for a direct comparison of measurements etc). I have seen fans with this BCD for a Safari? Does anybody know if this fan would fit? Or can anybody shed any light on what's going on with my "wrong size" pump/clutch? Are there in fact two different sizes for this model of Terrano? Maybe somebody sells an adaptor so I can fit my old fan onto this clutch housing? I'm really just looking for any help I can get tracking down a suitable fan.

Thanks

Kevin

Wouldn't it be easier to buy and fit the correct water pump?

No - pretty sure it's not from a forklift. Looking at the photos online, they have a different style clutch with a full plate for the fan hub. Mine just looks like a slightly smaller version of the "standard" pump/clutch.

Yep - I have considered that of course. But I don't have any money to spend on this truck at all, so I was really hoping I could pick up a suitable fan as they sell for around $75 compared to $165 - $300 for a new pump/clutch. I can see me ending up going down this route though. At least I'll have got a few years out of the current pump so I won't feel too bad if that's the case.

I've just had to be careful with it, especially long hills and towing. Off road is a different story - things get hot real quick, and engaging 4wd for more than a short burst would be terminal. Consequently it's only been used as a second car run-around and hasn't ventured too far from home.

Why can't you just clock the old fan a bit and drill new holes?

There are about 4 different water pumps for Td/Qd engines, any decent parts shop should know that and have told you what to check when buying it.
You could try a wrecker that has a few terrano's or an engine importer to find the right fan.

Yeah thats what I did when I replaced the water pump on my TD27. Wrecker was real cool, he had shitloads of fans on the wall, so just experimented till we found one that fit.

May it be a td27 non turbo fan you need? I get the feeling td27 and td27t have a different size fan

The holes need to be closer to the centre than the width of the metal insert - it doesn't extend far enough in. I tried rigging up an adapter out of some offcuts of sheet metal I had lying around but my tools and skill levels were insufficient for the tolerance required ;-)

At the time it never occurred to me there would be more than one model. It was bought off TradeMe and advertised as replacement pump for Terrano 89-95. I can't remember if it was TD27 or TD27T - at the time I wouldn't have noticed. I assumed they were all turbo'ed. I know differently of course now!

Having looked around again, I have found a fan advertised for "Nissan Pathfinder 85 - 95, Navara D21 TD27 Diesel 92-" which looks as though it would definitely fit, and also another one advertised for "Nissan Patrol GQ Y60, Maverick DA 88 - 99 TD42". The first one is 8-blade, the second one is 7-blade. These fans are 410mm diameter rather than 450mm diameter, and everything is pointing to mine being a water pump for a non-turbo TD27.

I'm going to try a few local wreckers today, but I think my mystery is solved. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
