Thought I would take the GF for a drive along the beach from Kaiapoi northwards. Entered the beach on the north side of the waimak river and headed out onto the beach. This area is quite wide at low tide. Anyhow about 1 minute into the beach some dude comes sprinting upto me from a couple of vehicles frantically waving his arms
Turns out his GF had flattened the battery while he was out surfing on an incoming tide and the water was already lapping around all four wheels 8O But the worst thing is none of the fishing guys would help him 8O The car was about a 94 nissan terrano.
I gladly towed him out and was on my merry way. I would say that 10 mins longer and it would have been all fun and games.
I have to saywhat kind of a*****le wouldn't help . 10 minutes of your time to try and jump the guys rig or just attach a strap and pull him up the beach really isn't that hard. Sorry about the anger but I've seen to many try-hard 4WD owners just drive past people in need when all thats needed is 5 minutes of your time.
i am relatively new to off roading, but if i came across someone in trouble i would do everything i could to help get him out!! how can you just drive past? we came across a guy up north who had lost a wheel in the middle of the night (on road). first instinct was to stop and help, this guy had his wife and two kids there, i ask again, how could you just drive past?
You've got too, it just how it is.
I've never been in that situation, but I can imagine that emotions of watching you wheels slowly get swallowed, cos tides don't come in very fast really.
Also as De-Ranged said.... Who doesn't like a challange
I am an newbie to Off Road work but helped out a bunch of guys who were stranded with the tide coming in on them yesterday.
It was a sight to see with the little Daihatsu Rugger dragging the big Isuzu's ass out of the soft sand.
And this was just after they had driven past us laughing their asses off at us stuck about 300m from where they bogged.
And they never even asked if we needed help when they drove past they just laughed....so they were bloody lucky we bothered helping...
any 4x4'er in his right mind couldnt / wouldnt, drive past a chalenge of towing someone out.
I know that towing or winching someone out of a sticky / tricky situation is the same amount of enjoyment as driving thru the same obstacle that they just got hung up on without any problems at all.. same fun factor.and on the other foot, its great fun to get yourself ball deep in the shit and have someone get you out.
"FARK!! you pulled my truck out of there ! ! !,,, YOUR THE MAN ! ! !"
SO, STOP TO HELP SOMEONE IN THE SHIT??? "ABSOFUKINGLUTLY"
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
As someone said, what goes around comes around. I always help a person in need if i can. Last person I helped had hydroed their surf in a river. The ol MU had no prob pulling him out. Funny thing is I had just been through the same place, (Awatere river in Marlborough, sometimes its quicker to go through thr river than wait for the traffic lights.)
A good mate of mine in hawkes bay could have done with some help from us like minded types - he drove his mates down i think ocean beach last summer in a 1983 falcon panel van -(pretty mint one too) to go diving and to get a few paua etc but driving home the tide came in and they got water in the distributor stopping the old girl completely. They tried for ages to get it out and by the time a 4x4 motor bike turned up it was too late. They have pics of the roof just submerging under the sand. The insurance company wasnt happy either they had to get a digger down there to retrieve it
You would have to help, its all part of the fun, but i would always make sure my truck will never be in danger even if i get stuck, no matter how long the rope has to be. Its part of the off road thing, getting stuck or helping someone who is.
As we are telling stories about this I thought I woiuld jump in with one of my one.
The last time I went for a drive and a couple of Paua with my father we got bogged down in the sand just passed the river around red rocks. The Mitzi coming the opeerstie way ended up getting stuck as well as the LandCruiser behind me. I knew the guy behind from the local 4wd club. Betwenn the three of us and the vehicles tring to pass us and getting stuck we had a blast. At one stage there were 5 of us stuck. We all helped each other, laughin an gruntin and diggin as we went. All part of the game I say and whats the point of going in to the great wide of this great country of ours if you never actually get out of your vehicle. might as well saty at home and watch discovery.
The other time we got stuck (in the same spot) a mitzi came up, told me the I should dig myself out and left (w#*ker). 300 mtrs down the track in went to cross the flooded river. didn't stop to check it out first or ask the locals watchin from the other side and swamped his toy, with water coming through the cab at window height. The next guy behind me came along and pulled me no problems. After crossing the river on foot and talking to the locals who left the other guy in the river for half an hour as the watched and laughed. Anyway my mate who had never been out 4wding was shittin himself and saying that he never wanted to do that again.
Well he has now bought himself a Zuk and loves the sport now and always brings up the trip.
