Post by mudsurfv6 »

just wondering where people have added a breather to their winch? pictures? how to do it?

I've got a runva ewx12000 if it makes any difference.

When I ran an electric winch I fully sealed the motor and tapped in a hose fitting in the end cap.... It never got water in it when I had it....
As for the gear box end.... Just made sure it had a coating of grease....(not packed full)
(Warn Xd9000i) You can see the hose fitting in the brush cover towards the left of the pic.

this brass fitting I have, its 5/16 hose by 1/8 BSP. standard fitting.

I have googled what size drill bit & what tap I need to use to fit it but now more confused.

can someone please tell me in English what size drill bit and tap to use?

First you need to confirm it is a BSP thread...or BSPT (T = tapered)
The drill size for tapping a 1/8th BSP or BSPT is 8.8mm so says the cart below.

Whatever you have you need to rock into an engineering supplier and get a tap to match... Take in the fitting and they will ID it for you..

its the same size and thread as the breather holes in surf/hilux/prado diffs if that helps.

panic over folks. :)

the cap on the end is just soft crap so I drilled a 9mm hole, put some pressure on the nut part with a smaller ring spanner and just threaded the fitting into the hole. didn't take too much pushing, but should be tight enough to not let water in, hopefully.

fitting is as low as I can get it & the hose is clear so if any water does get in i'll see it in the hose.

sorted. :)
