spent heaps of time and searching to figure out how the overdrive works on my sr20 with fwd box in my suzuki, its a kickdown cable trans so has no wires from engine to gearbox or no tcu. shifts gears fine up till 3rd but I have no idea how to get the overdrive to turn on. gearbox has 2 plugs on the gear selector at gearbox end and I think they are park start and dash lights has another small 3 pin plug and im thinking thats the overdrive solinoid just have no idea how to wire it to a push button. (put power to it join together?)
hopeing someone who has done it before can help as I feel it shouldnt be too hard but is holding me back heaps, (truck will do what feels like 30km tapped out need that extra gear)
cheers

use a simple relay with a switch just like doing spot lights should work
Re: who runs a sr20 and fwd gearbox? or knows how od works
I have had an sr20 primera, excellent engines. Unfortunately I never got to playing with the box.
3 pin sounds like it may have a relay built in? Does the pinout look like |_| ?
In which case it is a matter of putting power across pins "86" and "85". Which will close the coil and presumably grounds pin 87 to engage the solenoid. You should be able to do this without destroying anything, and you'll hear it click in.
Check for continuity from the pins to ground first so you dont short anything out.

As to the wiring, you'll want a latching pushbutton switch (the kind that most oem o/d selectors are)
Have a nosey at the haynes manual for the primera, it will have wiring diagrams and colour codes in it and should answer your query.

This is nearly related.
I to have the SR20de fwd with cable kick down. Just wondering what you used for the out put of the fwd diff. Its pretty tight in there for uni joints, its really the front one that runs past the engine crank case,or can we use the original CV? I'm running Hilux drive shafts and axles.
Cheers MIKE.

can you explain this for me please? the pins do look like that |_| what do you mean by put power across it?MihiT wrote:I have had an sr20 primera, excellent engines. Unfortunately I never got to playing with the box.

If you have 3 pins it will be the temp sender and od solenoid with a possible common earth.
Get an ohm meter out and check resistance between pins, temp sender will be anywhere between 300 -3000 ohms depending on temp and solenoid will be 12-20 ohms.

ok so one will be for temp sender and the other 2 the solenoid. so need to earth one of the solenoid terminals then put power on the other one and that should activate the solinoid?

Re: who runs a sr20 and fwd gearbox? or knows how od works
It could be that one is common to both temp and od, or the solenoid could be earthed to the transmission case and 2 of the 3 wires are temp only. Check it with a meter before connecting anything to power.

does a more comprehensive job of explaining than I can.
Yes, putting power across it means 12v, just be sure you've got the right pins!
Are you able to post up a picture?

ok so I got 3 pins the wires are black/yellow pink/black and brown.
all pins have continuity between the pins and non to earth
pin 1 has 24 ohms to pin 2 and 24 ohms to pin 3
and pin 2 and 3 have 48 ohms between them

Re: who runs a sr20 and fwd gearbox? or knows how od works
Maybe it has 2 solenoids, one for od and one for lockup. Pin 1 is common so I would earth this and power either 2 or 3 and listen for a faint click, if you hear a click the next step is trying it while moving in 3rd gear and see what happens. If you do have lockup as well as od it can be useful to increase engine breaking while going down hill.
