DAIHATSU MODs

Post by D1HARD »

Ok I am new here.... :D
I was just wondering what would be some good basic off road modifications to my cheapo Rugger.

I have had her through the Devils Gate in bucketing rain no sweat but in the soft sand I feel she will bog.

Is there any easy or realatively cheap means of getting the Rugger a bit better in some of the nastier sand...?

Or and good reccomended modifications?

Any ideas welcome... :D

sand

sand is best(i think) tackled with BIG fat near bald half flat road tyres,, floatation is the key to sand.

Holy hell...I have heard of the conversion into a Surf for the Lexus/Soarer V8 but never into a Rugger!!

How much did the conversion cost?

What was it like to drive....awesome?

Would you do another conversion?....

And yes I think I definately need bigger rims and tyres for getting serious on the sand,I drove way round to the Karori stream and nearly got stuck in the soft sand on the bay just before it....

Only just made it out.....

What are those Ruggers/Rocky's like offroad? The mid 80's ones have solid axel fronts so good articulation? Whats the 2.8 turbo diesel like? Cheers, Matt

The 2.8 seems to be ok,it goes pretty good in most terrains...
I have been through the Devils Gate in extremely bad weather and the Vitara that went before me up to the gate slid and rolled back and actually gave up.

The Rugger was in 4H and just ploughed up and through the gate without even slipping... :D

I seriously think for the soft sand some bigger lift and bigger tyres would make a tremendous difference, and also a bit more power wouldnt go a miss....

I have some cash to spend but am not sure what is best to do first, power or handling.....I think I will possibly drive the engine to death then replace it with something better.

I was told that some of the Daihatsu gear was compatible with some Toyota gear just what is compatible I dont know.

I will more than likely get the lift kit on and some bigger tyres and rims, but am concerned that I may loose some down low power...

Any suggestions?

HI
if one of you computor nuts ( good mechanic hopeless computor thingie) instructs me how to get pics from "my documents" to this forum Ill post the pics that I still have although they are not that great. Would I do another? YEP!! in a flash as its not too differcult and almost the same engine space as a surf and I have done a few of those. Or I could talk??? you though it step by step (dollar by dollar)

Awesome I will Pm you my telephone number and I can web host those pictures if you send them to me at nemesis_nzpc@hotmail.com
I have a few guys in Wellington who could possibly do the conversion but I want to do the conversion as cheaply as possible.

I have an engine and ECU and gearbox (they are all autos??) for a Lexus V8 within my grasp.....just I am not mechanically minded enough to do the conversion myself.... :(

How did she run with the V8?

Did you keep the standard Daihatsu diffs... ???

What about gearbox??

Hi again
How did she run with the V8?
my part of the project for a customer was to do all the mechanical he was/is to do the electrical side of things,as and I dont know if he has done this, I havent heard it running. But it will be the same as all toyota v8s , revy as hell 8000+ rpms all day no problems.
Did you keep the standard Daihatsu diffs...
are you crazy? hell no simple change to LSD front and rear Hilux Surf solid front model Rugger so the swap was/is easy? change steering to hi cross over with hilux IFS power steering box using the same tec info as swaping a surf steering. remount shocks was probberly the most interesting exercise.cheers DJ more to come ????

There was a rover V8 powered one doing the winch challenges a year or two back. Wasnt too badly set up but the old carbbed rover just never seemed to run right.......
