Hi all,
I'm looking at a 1999 TD42T motor for the Hippo, just wondering if there would be any major difference fitting wise (looms etc), as I would prefer a straight bolt up job.
Looking at paying around $3500 for the complete motor with around 80k on it. Would it be worth it?

3.5k is a good price if it comes complete starter,alt,p/s pump etc
80k on the clock could be real at that year,hard to tell.
theres a turbo one at import yard in chch at $4750 that looks mint but still dont know how many k's its done,they tidy them up pretty good these days.

Go price a genuine clutch, when i worked for Nissan they were a lot cheaper than after market. As for being 12v, might be easier to convert the rest of the truck to 12v. Or changing the alt, and all the sensors from a Y60 24v TD42T should be easy enough, but the sensors won't be cheap new.

With an aftermarket kit you have to factor in a modofied injector pump to get the most out of.
Talked to GQTROL about it a while back, and you really need to change the plunger to an 11mm to get the fuel delivery required for good performance gains. Thats another $1500 ish from memory.
Also, you probably want to think about giving the motor a freshen up, rings bearings etc etc, so another 2k if you do it your self....
Plus a turbo kit, 3k or more aren't they??
Based on that, a TD42T with 80,000 on the clock for $3500 ain't bad!!!!!!
Wonder what sensors would need to be changed to swap it to 24V?? I would say the later modle engine would be full of electronic sensors being close to 10years newer than your current engine??

Looking at the Nissan parts system, there seems to be no difference in the two models, engines don't seem to have any extra electrical bits. So basically the only things you'd need to change are the starter motor, alternator, temp sender, oil pressure sender and the fuel shut of solenoid.

You can convert the Y61 engine to 24V. Michael Whyte did it in his old GQ race truck. When we got it after he rolled it, the wiring was a bit of a mess so couldn't say how much of the loom was made redundant from the swap.
Fuel pumps are the same Y60 - Y61 i.e. mechanical, just change fuel stop solenoid.
Alt is different, as Y61 one doesn't have brake vac. pump on the back of it. Instead is gear driven off the front cover plate. So should be easier to find larger amperage 24V alt for it.
Engine mounts are different, Y61 should be 4 bolt arrangement.

Yeah but which V8 diesel boy? How about a nice new 4.5L toyo turbo diesel? Ha Ha. I have a similar dilema.(most distressing) Turbo upgrade to non turbo TD42 with all associated costs or sell good diesel for how much?, and put it into superior engine swap .Prefer to stay diesel.
