The S3 L.R in the last photo is called Peaches. The heart of Peaches along with the PTO and winch lives on in Dave.

This is Dave

Dave lives in Australia and is still running the original engine from Peaches. Dave has been EVERYWHERE

It's still getting love :) Brakes done, new(hand me down) tyres fitted engine electrics and dash working, some lights in the front sorta working.

But more painting and odds and ends to do still ;)

We have had the restored front fenders stashed away carefully, so with the exhaust valve clearances set (side valve engine), the time to fit them was now :)

To finish off the guards and hide some of my repairs, we adapted some S3 alloy guard tops to fit. They make good work benches too.

Time to sort out some of the minor issues, wrecked doors, tail gate that doesn't fit the new cross member, bent bonnet etc

This is the best I can do to give the doors another chance short of making a new skin for them. Maybe I'll do that on the next rebuild ;)
image.jpeg
So what your looking at, is two alloy doors that are quite damaged. Once alloy is damaged it doesn't come back into shape, it stretches and gets a spring to it.

So the experiment is to make a reinforcing plate to go in behind, and urethane it in place to take the spring out of the skin. Most use rivets to hold the reinforcing plate in place until the urethane sets. You them grind the heads off the rivets and job done.

In this case you see both sides of the door skin, so rivets weren't ideal. Tried self tapping screws as an experiment and seems to have worked out ok, the screws came out tonight and the plate stayed tight to the door skin :)

Dad on the strip disc taking the bonnet back to bare alloy. It's hopefully gonna be the blingest straightest panel of them all. Maybe haha
image.jpeg
And the bloody tailgate. Who knew huh
image.jpeg
Better tidy this up properly later on ;)

It's been up and down the road an few times and the donor motor of dubious condition after sitting in a crate for 30 years seems to be getting better with each run and tweak :)

Great work!

Got myself a series 2 SWB that needs the same attention. Difficult to get the body off the chassis?
