Post by pudd99 »

This could be a really stupid question but how do i tell if my 80 series is 12 or 24 volt? Or does the v even stand for volt? Thanks in advance

Mine has 2 batteries but voltmeter on the dash says it charges to 12V (14V actual) but the starter is a 24V unit. I have found a starter relay that looks like it joins the circuit from 12V to 24V for the starter... So maybe some are both?

Could be a 24valve engine if it's got the 24V written on it, check the engine model 1HDT / F / T / E

Otherwise as others have said if it's got a working series /parallel switch for starting, with dual batteries it's prob 12 with 24 starting, tho some Australian imports are just dual 12v , follow the leads from pax battery to confirm

For voltage

1 battery = 12v no other options. Done, have a beer.

2 batteries could be either 12v or 24v

Follow the battery cables.
If both -ve cables go to the chassis or block the its 12V

If one of the -ve terminals goes to the other battery's +ve then its 24v

For valves.

Google 12 valve and 24 valve 80 series engine images. the rocker covers are way different.

To be absolutely, concrete, 100% sure, take the head off and start counting.

1HD-FT's are pretty easy, the have a big wide rocker cover with "24 Valve" written on it.

All 80 series landcruisers with 2 batteries are 12 volt but with 24 volt starting via a big relay by the passengers side battery, leave this battery alone. You should only ever connect any accessories like winch etc to the drivers side battery as it always remains the 12 volt

There are some budget normally non turbo 80 series ones out there that are 12 volt only
