Electrics- 24v to 12v

I'm putting a 24v motor into a 12v system. I'd like to keep it 24v for the starter motor and plugs. Did a lot of reading on the net and have found a couple of solutions.
First one is running a third battery for the electrics
Second is replacing all the 24v parts with 12v
Third and preferred by me is chucking in a 24-12 step down before the fuse box. Anyone tried this before? I'm horrible with electrics so this could be a job for an auto electrician but that means paying someone money and that goes against the very fibre of my being. Ideas?

Cant you just run it the same way the stock cruiser is with the 24 volt starter system and 2 batteries .

Put a 12 volt alternator on it . To charge both batteries to 12 volt in parallel .

To start it a relay changes the batteries from parallel to series . And runs the glows n starter motor

Ok that sounds simple and therefore I like it- What parts would I need, aside from the 12v alternator?

The series- parallel switch from an 80 series landcruiser

I dont know the cruiser system very well so correct me if im wrong. When the batteries are put in series (24v) for that time alot of your other electrics will have to be isolated. You wont want 24v going to lighs and radios and computers etc

It would be a lot easier, cheaper & better to change the starter motor & glow plugs.

I've got a 12v 2H starter that has a hole in the side but im thinking I could swap some of its components out to the 24v 12H-T starter I have, changing it to 12v. Anyone tried that?

Ant everything else in the vehicle is still only connected to one battery so only receiving 12 volt .

Personally I would just 12 volt the motor . Surely theres enough oem parts lying around that will work fine . As opposed to trying to re invent a 12 24 setup

Yeah I'm kinda inching that way. Might price up both options and see what comes out on top.

put the windings and stator from a TD27 starter into the TD42 starter body or just change the part that bolts to the gearbox, the solenoid for the spigot/ ring gear engagement is just that, a large electro-magnet it wont care what current it see's.

replace 24 alt with that of a TD27 and then just buy TD27 glow plugs.

or is that too simple

well short of a half tap wiring system and having unblanced charging problems.... have you investigated the parts compatibility between your 12 volt/24 volt combination.

just because I made the assumption it was a td42, doesnt mean it wouldn't work for an Isuzu toyota john deere what ever it might be.

eg if it was a landcrusier what 12 volt glow plugs are compatible, what startermotors share the same winding body where you could change the spigot end over or as above alternators, there all made by bosch or hitatchi or copies of them under contract for car manufacturers anyway.

I've got a few bits from a 2H(12v)- which is basically a non-turbo'd 12h-t, which is the 24v engine. I'm going to try change the components of the starter over from the 2H to the 12h-t, like your td27/td42 idea. Should work, not sure about the plugs though ill have to dig a bit deeper

I'm putting a 2H-T from a 24v 60 series into my 12v 40 mud truck. I have gone for a cable stop control, 10.5v heater plugs with a manual button and I'm going to try to swap the starter motor electrics from my old 12v b engine to the nose cone on the 2h unit. I'll let you know how the motor swap goes later this weekend , wish me luck!

If you have trouble with the 3b starter I've got a spare 2H starter that has a wee hole in the side that might be good for parts
