ORE Westcoast Easter 2017

Post by mike »

Who's keen? I'm definitely heading down. A few (or maybe just a couple) from the Kiwi 4x4 club are keen. Would be good to catch up and do some tracks with some of the old ORE crew.

Tracks I'm thinking we could do
Tailings again (love this track)
Maybe chasm although will depend on the track conditions and trucks keen.
Tunnels again, just for the shear coolness of that area.

Touristy stuff,
Denniston, Cave creek ( A must walk ), pan cake rocks. Gold mining history in numerous places. Really worth the stop and reading all about it (lyell - the old ghost road start)

Stay in westport motorcamp,
Somewhere around Reefton

I'm aiming at a nice relaxed trip, good lunch spots, not breaking trucks, good team work (so as not to break the trucks) and not too long a days, ie back to have dinner and drinks.

To do tailings you would ultimately want a winch, otherwise a very capable truck without and to buddy up to a truck that has one. Definitely mud tyres and don't mind a few new racing stripes. (not panel damage, just pin stripes). It is an epic track. Min 32's or pretty high dif clearance.

The other tracks are pretty mild (usually) except chasm, which is usually for tough trucks. Although my surf has done it twice without damage but that was quite a long time ago.

Sat/Sun would be main tracks. With Friday and Monday travel/shiny tracks.

I'll probably stay down a few days extra either side and have an extended easter this time.

Definitely keen.
Could be an option to hire the Westport Scout Hall and have our own venue for a weekend?

Yeah that sounds cool. Do they have showers and toilets? If not that westport camp ground is pretty cool, it has quite a cool hangout area. But having our own base would also be really cool as we have a guy coming with a caravan.

I'll get back to ya once I talk to the guy. We use scout halls a bit as they are cheap. Greymouth one costs $80 a night, has wetback to the showers.

Sounds like fun ... ill know for sure closer to the time.
For Tailings winches and chainsaws are now essential ... over last Cpl of years has been a lot of windfall and scouring of the track with rain.

Wife has said yes, depending on costs....

FYI, NZ4WDA look to be running a trip on the Westcoast over easter,

"A circuit of the Paparoa Range with scenic & tuff route options"

As my mum is here and hopefully she will be funding this, I'll have to ask her what she wants to do....

There are usually a few club trips in the area over easter. As long as they don't hold us up there won't be too many fisticuff incidents.

As for bikes, I'm not sure, I guess so. The only thing I would be hesitant about is that we would be slower than you guys and recovery if they break? could be fun though watching you go through water holes and rivers

There are only so many times Jed will want to come for a night time dip with me and my bike  so I'd be picky with the rivers

We'll see. Might even be better to just come for a beer and a catch up with a few faces.

I'll be coming if I can, always more than happy to drag you out of a river Taz. Maybe I'll just get the yz and come for a hoon on the bikes mate!

Been a bit of track work lately so no doubt some fun new parts to explore
