Well after a shitload of fun and adventure with the first Jalopy (thread.... viewtopic.php?f=18&t=678 for those that haven't seen it, its finally time for V2.0. There is a lot of things I didn't like about V1, but didnt really bother fixing, just wheeled the piss out of it and come what may lol. Version two will be a little different. Ist it wont be an out and out rock-crawler, that was great for the very rare times I actually went crawling, but for the most part it was not "ideal" for bush stuff etc, too long a wheelbase made for a lack of maneuverability, I got used to 10 pt turns all the time, 2nd, too high off the ground, 3rd, to soft suspension, 4, not enough up-travel.. 5, not enough power 6, not enough usable storage on-board, 7 really shitty wiring and electrics in general. 8, weak kingpin/steering area kept f@%king out, but to be fair that's sorted now. 9, Milemarker hydraulic winch was strong, but oh so slow.. 10, pain in the ass to wash, should've used better paint, not rushed the rattle can style

Things that didn't go wrong that surprised me a little... 1, never broke a diff, who said Hilux diffs were weak! lol 2, never broke a CV, Longfields are the bizzo! the only time one shit itself was when all the destroyed kingpin bearings ended up inside the CV, hardly the fault of the Long.
3, no gearbox or TFcase issues at all, actually the drivetrain was pretty bulletproof, engine was superb, even when overheated because of a fan relay f@%king out. Only broke one rear axle, and I think my replacements are a much better design and will last heaps better.
Love having a windscreen and doors, no ways I'm going buggy styles! I like to be warm and dry
rear mounted radiator is awesome... exo cage was good, but could be better, Exedy 6 puck beasty clutch works very well, no more smoking up the clutch when towing, and isn't too bad on the leg lol

Don't get me wrong, I had shitloads of fun in it, but time for a change. Up here in the bay our club, Whakatane and Waikato get into Teams Recovery comps, basically 3 trucks, 3 tight un-driveable stages in a day, no winching, but using steel cables, pulleys, Kito clips and using your team to tow etc, very technical, take a look here for a thread.

I'm going to aim at this a little more rather than crawling or suchlike. Should be a great bush truck, maybe be able to go a bit faster too lol

Here's a couple of pics of cad mock-ups, I'll design it all on cad first, much like V1, this makes sure everything fits, moves etc without having to cut shit off again lol. Its also not going to make huge progress to start with, but you'll slowly see where I'm going with it..
This is just jiggling shit around to see what fits where, and might change drastically, or might not lol
So far parts wise I have engine, transfer, diff heads, seats, radiator and cab+guards and thats about it, looking for a Lexus or Supra Turbo A340E reardrive auto box if anyone has one lying in a corner...

i have a jza80 turbo a340 trans, buddy. near palmy. pretty sure i have the torque cinvertor too. but No bell housing. you are aware they don't have a kickdown cable to control line pressure, ay? (all the earlier A340s do though (soarer etc).

That's what I was thinking also, distinctive intake there... And maybe portal? Axles... They arnt very central in that mockup

but having sat in trials trucks all my 4x4 life, what are you doing for weight in the front ?

Only asking as I have seen radiators etc shifted to rear bla bla bla and then had to sit in a wheelie friendly rig which isn't so flash for climbing

Just a thought and the only one I got hehehe

Hiya Sig, I thought that would pique your interest! The model is an LS3 but no, its not what will be going in, I'm going with a krauter!
4.2L Audi quadcam V8, 330hp bog standard, vvti, variable length intake runners, alloy block, pretty cool engine. Picked up a complete running 2007 A6 Quattro from Turners for less than a grand crashed in the front, bumpers and headlights must be a million bucks

Yup portals are in the mix, I'm going to build something based on a Hummer unit, but with alloy and hopefully to fit inside a 15" rim
Thse are by Jessie Haines in the US, 55 deg steering

Hello Mr Skid, Very valid points you raise, and a lot of research has/is going into this very subject. Popular opinion on Pirate, which we know is the be all and end all of wheeling info , is that it doesn't make that much difference, build it wrong and it wont work, build it front engined and wrong and it wont work. There is a lot of buggies etc over there that are mid engined and perform very well,
that chopper Shannon Campbell builds all his wreckage mid engined and he goes ok, people say his cars are some of the best in the rocks. It all comes down to getting the weight you have central and low as possible, and getting your link geometry right. Weight balance F/R is important, obviously, but its not everything. That other chopper.. whats his name... oh yeah Robby Gordon, his trophy truck is mid engined too, hes built a lot of them that way, a lot of it is personal preference, I've had front engine, now I want to try mid
There will be a big fuckoff PTO winch and gas tank, and batteries, and any other shit I can think of in the front also, good thing about CAD, it will tell you what the balance is before cutting any steel.
You must remember trials trucks have fuckall wheelbase too, which will magnify any issues with over rotation when climbing, not an issue for this project, it should be similar to V1 in that respect, ie 117 inches (2900mm) or thereabouts, maybe a little shorter.

Hi Blake, Thanks for the heads up, I did not know that, in that case I'm really after a Lexus box, the Supra one must use a solenoid for line pressure, I'll ned to check if my shift controller can look after that aswell, I dont think so though.

Portal porn... Not mine, this is Armada Engineering in the US, very nice units, I wont be straying too far from this design, (this is an IFS unit though) Seems to work for the Cody Waggoner Ultra4 car

So your just using hummer internals? I do know Jesse can fit his setup into a 17"rim. Why not just use the factory housings and have the option of a semi easy replacement if something fun happens?

can i suggest, from my drag racing experience (toyota street cars) to perhaps source an A340 from a twin turbo Soarer. It is stronger than the A341 found in the jza70 supra and jzx90 (A343 i think) and slightly stronger than the a340 found in the soarer v8(which is a lexus sc400) and also has a lower ratio first gear.
such a trans can hold 260rwkW with standard internals IF it is good condition, and has an uprated valvebody. Sing out if you need more info/help sourcing/guiding to uprated parts. The trans in my soarer has been built to handle 400rwkW.

Good to see V2 and it looks good. I know with the offroaders a rear engine works well so I can't see why it wouldn't work in V2. With the V8 the hilux diffs mightn't be strong enough with the extra traction on the rear wheels because of the extra weight.

Hiya Richard, longtime no see How's life in Nelson?, still bashing out kitchens?, and how's Janet? You still got the old Hilux?
As for the diffs not being strong enough, they'll be fine, you must remember that with portal hubs, that have 2:1 gearing, the diffs will only see half the strain that the would normally. In fact the whole drive-train will see half the strain. A stock Hummer has a pissy little diff and tiny axles, for this very reason.

Getting H1 parts is now hard, and expensive. There was atime you could pick up H1 Portal box that had been gassed off a military H1 for 200usd..this is not the case now. One guy in our club has a set on his buggy, and another set in his shed, but he wont part with them for love nor money
So what do we do when we cant source them??, we build our own!! The H1 parts are heavy as all hell, and dont fit anything smaller than a 17" rim, I'm going to build some based on a H1 design, but more like the Armada Engineering ones (pic further back in the thread)
I've never heard of a club banning portals.... maybe in comps yes..
