whats that noise?

Post by Petemcc »

every body loves this game!

what the hell is that noise?
i have a 91 3L v6 surf
just put in new clutch, seems to be working great but now i have a nose like mud tyres on the road. a whiring noise. but it aint the tyres. it gets louder when i go faster (not as the revs go up but the speed) but goes away when i put the clutch in....

therefore i think that it may be the from clutch back. maby for some reason the front drve shaft is still spinning when i 2wd?

a while ago i swaped front diffs both were add but one was from an auto and mine is a manual the new auto diff was short of a plug (mine had 2) i just left it off and it seemed ok. could this be a problem i just didnt hear before?

any ideas?

Cheers Pete

Did you replace the release bearing when you did the clutch?

Given that it goes away when you put the clutch in it's likely to be directly related to the clutch work.

When you did the diff swap did you check the ratio's of the diffs?

The diff should have a single plug which I think is an indicator, the actuator should have two vacuum lines to it. I don't know if this indicator feeds back to anything, I suspect it feeds the 4wd light on the dash....

yep replaced the thrust and the spiggot bearing. thrust should make a noise when you put cluch in not when its out, and if it was spiggot it would get louder with revs not speed.

my old diff had two plugs on it and the vaccume hoses and the new diff hase the hoses but only one plug..... yep diff ratios are the same, tho shouldnt make a difference in 2wd (its deffinately disconnecting at the axel side of diff and i have a manual hub on the other side, i thought maby spinning from transfercase to diff.... dont know y tho.)

Sounds like something that spins the same speed as the drive shaft or diff, so it could be diff, transfercase bearings, gearbox output shaft bearings or wheel bearings. You need to narrow down the area the noise is coming from.

Check your front hubs - possibly one in & one out - thus causing the unlocked one to spin up backwards. It can make quite a noise!

Did you do up the driveshafts properly when the GB went back in? And are they in-phase?

Speed related probably means something on the output of the GB and not likely to be clutch related at all...

Check all wheel nuts are tight, driveshaft bolts, look for crook UJs, or possibly wheel bearings.

yea i figured it would most likely be output side of gbox.
there isnt really much of a vibration just a noise...
how do you check rear wheel bearings? same as front. they looked ok when we did the rear lokka a month ago...

how do you mean drive shafts in phase? prity sure they went back on the way they came off but will check. the front dive shaft shouldnt be spinning though should it?

If putting the clutch in at speed causes the noise to go away I wouldn't have thought it would be after the gearbox as that would continue to turn, I guess the forces are different being driven instead of driving.

yea i think it may be the rear diff (maby the pinion bearing) and it is just making the noise when under load.... am going to check to make sure there is no water in the oil (havnt checked in a while, if theres lots maby its just making it loud with the lokka) if not then i think that the diff may need setting up properly. will put some new oil and oil stabaliser in it and hope fully it will get me back to chch from invers on tuesday!

buga... afew small bits of metal in the bottom of the diff when i changed the oil. all seems to be goin round smoothly so i suspect ive taken chips off afew of the teeth in there.
the plan is to not drive it till tuesday and hope it makes it as i dont have a spare diff...

if i do blow it on the way how can i get it in a towable way? take out the drive shaft and pinion?

though that still doesnt really explain the noise does it... it doesnt feel like a bearing in the diff, fuckin hope it isnt cos i doubt it out make it to chch. tho if it was a bearing and metal bit had come off it you would definately be ablt to feel it and i think the noise would be abit worse.

Are the rear axles full floaters? If so - pull the rear axles & driveshaft & go home in front wheel drive.

The Hilux/Surf diff's aren't full floaters so you can't pull an axle and drive home.

If the head grenades hopefully it will still rotate so you could drive home in 4wd just using the front diff.

Can you get access to a workshop that has a hoist that will leave your wheels free to turn?. If so run the motor up on the hoist with a gear selected that will give you your noise, then go over the drive train with a stethoscope if the workshop has one , or use a long bladed screwdriver with your thumb placed over the end of the handle and your thumb against your good ear, place the blade against the section you want to listen to, noise will transmit through the screwdriver and you should be able to localise the noise to a specific component . If you don't have access to a hoist you can do the same with your vehicle on SECURE jackstands. When doing this beware of turning parts, JUST BE BLOODY CAREFUL. If the noise was'nt there before you did the clutch, I would go over the area you worked on. Could you have damaged the clutch plate or cover when you fitted the G/box, opps it's speed related.
Try removing first front dr/shaft and then rear dr/shaft , taking it for a drive , try the elimination thing.

TURN THE RADIO UP ( can't hear a thing ),

Worst case just remove the rear driveshaft and drive back in 4WD HI - it'll be just like driving a front wheel drive...

Sounds like you might have the same problem I had with the MU... blew the rear diff apart, chewed up some teeth... very noisy under load, quiet under engine braking and in reverse.

It WILL get worse if you drive it, to the point where it will probably hand grenade... unless you get every piece of metal out then a bits gonna end up going through the teeth and taking more bits off... a process which will snowball to the point where eventually there won't be any more teeth to chew :)

You're not having much luck with diffs... :?

well rear drive shaft is out and its now in front wheel drive for the trip up. abit of torque steer with the front auto lokka in. tried it in 1 wheel drive but #### that. would pull hard one way when under power and dive off the other if you took your foot off the gas or changed gears and i reckin my tyres would be abit worn down by the time i get there. atleast the road is pritty str8.
